The Tampa Bay Business Journal selects an annual 40 Under 40 list. I am one of 30 female *** Agents in the world, I am CEO of a company that represents pro athletes, I cohost a podcast with a *** player, and I'm a best-selling author. I've been nominated three times for this list. The last time, they told me I was too young. I was rejected again this year, but it's now many years later from when I was too young, and I have many additional accomplishments. This time around, no one on the list matches my accomplishments. In addition, this is the second time I've noticed that they've selected people who have unethical business practices. There is no transparency to the selection. The process doesn't seem honest; but rather, it appears to they select people who will spend money to buy large corporate tables at the awards event. They are disguising this list as 40 Under 40, but it appears they are using it as a fundraiser instead. They should be providing reasons to the losers who request it why they lost compared to other people on the list. The ****'s process should be completely exposed and critiqued, so we can be sure they are making decisions fairly. It doesn't appear that way now.Business response

Tampa Bay Business Journal's 40 Under 40 event is purely a function of our editorial process. The newsroom thoroughly reviews submission packets without reference to commercial or similar matters. Honorees are selected based on a number of factors, including business success, community involvement and leadership ability. Every year the company receives hundreds of highly qualified nominations and applicants. It's unfortunate but inevitable that some who are not selected feel they are unjustly overlooked. We're sorry this nominee is disappointed, and we disagree with several statements she has made in her correspondence with the BBB.Customer response

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
The Tampa Bay Business Journal still did not clarify their selection process or make transparent how much weight each category holds. For example, they should specify that letters of recommendation are X percent, business revenue is Y percent. That way, people only apply who have a chance of winning, and the process is fair and unbiased. I'd like to know if the Business Journal looks into a person's ethics and reputation as well in their decision-making process, since they are touting the top 40 people in business in our area. If money doesn't matter in this process, why do they ask for a company's salary? And I'd like them to clarify how they can possibly compare the revenue of a one-person company to that of an *** team or large corporation?
