On September 17 2022, I passed out while helping my friend with an altercation. I had a nasty cold and was on allergy pills for a severe allergic reaction, and I passed out for 15 minutes. My mother, upon hearing of this, was concerned (I sustained a TBI 9 years ago and still have some neurological effects). She insisted I go to an emergency room. The problem here is not the care, they did their due diligence. By the time we left, we were confident that the passing out was not a symptom of a bigger problem, and as we suspected, I just had a nasty cold (which turned into a nasty sinus infection of course), had taken more allergy pills than advisable, and was exhausted. Before we left, they informed me of the bill and after running the insurance, gave me some payment plan options around $100 total, and the option of a discount of $20 if I paid right then on site. I hate debt and an $80 emergency room visit sounded like a dream come true! I had recently signed up for decent insurance through my job, but remembered the last time I was in the ** (TBI) and was so relieved to not have gotten a $500-$900 bill. Imagine my surprise when I got a call in February saying that I owed $358! I informed the woman who called me of the deal I had gotten and she promised to investigate. Today, I got another call, stating that I still owe $358. After talking to many people, it was confirmed that $80 for the entire visit is indeed what was offered to me by the hospital. My insurance didn't pay $358 of the bill because I wasn't admitted. I paid the bill asap upon clarifying this. Services rendered are services rendered. But I am extremely upset that I was mislead and then saddled with an unexpected bill. I would have been fine if they had presented that bill upfront, or said it was just an estimate. But they said $80 was paid in full (my mother as a witness and confirmed by the billing department). And then went back on that. And that's not ok. Especially as this affects credit.
