9/8/22 Invoice ***** My 83 year old mother in law called Lightning Bug because her dishwasher was tripping a breaker. While the technician was there she also wanted him to change a light bulb in a 10 foot ceiling and change a battery in a smoke detector that was beeping. When the technician was done he had replaced all 6 of her perfectly functioning 4 year old smoke detectors for $700.00, replaced all six of her perfectly functioning 4 year old lights for $963.00, replaced a functioning smoke/carbon detector for $235.00, installed a house surge protector for $820.00 and replaced the breaker for $285.00. The total bill came to $3,000.00. This work was done three weeks before she was moving in to an assisted living facility. She is very vulnerable and says yes to whatever strangers suggest to her. I contacted the business on her behalf to see what had happened and they had the technician who did the work call me back. He insisted that she asked for all the work he performed. He said he didnt realize she was susceptible to suggestions and that he would be more careful when dealing with elderly clients in the future. However, he indicated the work was performed so there was nothing he could do now. When my wife spoke to her mother she said she did not ask for new lights or new smoke detectors and she didnt really understand what had happened. It seemed a little strange to me that the technician just happened to have a set of lights and smoke detectors on hand to replace the ones in her house. As if he all along intended to try to upsell her on things she did not need for a house she was leaving in three weeks. Just because an elderly customer keeps saying yes for things they dont need does not justify taking advantage of their vulnerability. As a footnote, after the work was done, the smoke detectors were beeping and the technician had to come out and replace one. Also, the dishwasher continues to trip the breaker.
