BEWARE! This office doesn't think that HIPAA laws apply to them. I called to get a copy of my records & my children's records. I was told I need to fill out a records request form through our new doctor & the records would be sent to them. HIPAA allows for patients to request records be released to themselves & I explained this is what I wanted. I was told they would ONLY give me our records if I came to their office & filled out the form in person. I explained this wasn't possible, we're a military family, we received orders to a new assignment & no longer live in Georgia. I asked for them to e-mail me the form & was told that their office "does not have a secure e-mail address" & could not send me a form via e-mail. A blank form e-mailed to me would have no personal information on it to require that it be sent via a secure server to begin with. Once I filled it out with personal information, I could mail or fax it to the office (though I don't for one second believe they don't have an e-mail address that I could send it to). I was told that mailing or faxing the form was also not possible because they need to see my I.D. & have a witness. I was again told that they would ONLY release our records to me if I came to the office in person. This office is blatantly breaking the federal HIPAA law, specifically this statute which can be referenced on the ******* website: Unreasonable Measures While the Privacy Rule allows covered entities to require that individuals request access in writing and requires verification of the identity of the person requesting access, a covered entity may not impose unreasonable measures on an individual requesting access that serve as barriers to or unreasonably delay the individual from obtaining access. For example, a doctor may not require an individual: -Who wants a copy of her medical record mailed to her home address to physically come to the doctor's office to request access and provide proof of identity in person.
