The business informed the consumer that even though their insurance paid for the complete examination, the consumer was responsible for buying the prescription. The consumer was charged $19 for the prescription and they feel it is wrong and they have never had to pay it before and feels others shouldn't have to pay it either.Business response

Business Response /* (1000, 17, 2022/03/29) */ Reviewed patient ledger to verify what the cost/payment was for. Pt insurance does pay for eyam and portion of the service the patient refers to in the complaint. However, the collected amount is the amount patient insurance leaves to the patient to pay (pt should be able to verify when she receives her Explanation of Benefits). Pt reports she has never paid for this service before but has every exam since **** (4). The charge is not based on whether the patient purchases glasses from us or not. It is a service that is necessary to reach an accurate************* for the patient but not covered under the exam portion covered by insurance. Patients purchasing**************************** are also charged for the service. The service is usual and customary at all ************************* practices. Although we do not agree with that being the case and also think it should be covered under the exam portion of the exam, insurance providers do not share that sentiment. Also note - insurance leaves either the fee in entirety or a portion depending on insurance coverage. Billing experts have warned and stated that collecting the insurance payment and writing off the patient portion can be considered patient enticement and noncompliant with medical billing regulations.
