Additional business information
The Better Business Bureau of Hawaii offers the following education tip when purchasing airline tickets:
Be wary of offers that promise "the moon" for a very low price, or ones that require immediate purchase to lock in the announced rate.
Use reputable travel agents to plan your trip.
Contact your Better Business Bureau for a report on the company you're considering using.
Be your own best protector. Even with all the consumer protection agencies and laws on the books, consumers must protect themselves by being leery of high pressure, "to good to be true" claims. Say "no" whenever you feel pressured or have questions that are not answered yet. Carefully check our businesses and deals before signing anything or paying money up front.
Do not do business with strangers who approach you at home without doing a thorough check. Make sure you have a permanent address and phone number for the business.
In addition, the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs provides the following information:
When you make full payment to the travel agency, make sure you receive your ticket or similar documentation. At this time, the agency should provide you with a written statement including:
The agency's name, business address, and telephone number.
The amount paid, the date of payment and an itemized statement of any balance due.
The name and address of the financial institution that maintains the travel agency trust account ad the name of the trust account.
The name of the entity the travel agency has arranged the services with, along with pertinent information such as the types of accommodations, the dates and time of services, and all restrictions, limitations, conditions, and fee assessments that pertain to the person's right to cancel, obtain a refund, change itinerary or make a claim for lost tickets.
The cancellation provisions of the contract between the travel agency and the consumer, and the rights and obligations of the parties.
The agency also must provide you with a disclosure of your consumer's rights no later than when it issues the tickets.
