My name is ***** *****. I live in *****, Idaho and for the last 12 months I have been working on a shop that needed to be sided as one of the final steps of completion. I hired Jay owner/operator from JVC LLC construction to facilitate the siding installation. The siding is rough cut stained and treated Douglas Fir from ******* ****** products. The application for the siding installation is to use exposed nail heads to hang the siding. In order to do this properly the nails must be Stainless Steel or Hot Dipped galvanized since the nail heads are exposed. This is not only common knowledge among competent contractors but is also stated on ******* ******s website under installation instructions for installers. After Jay agreed to do the job, he assured me the nails would be ring shanked and hot dipped galvanized if he could not find Stainless steel. A couple months after the first three sides of the building were complete and we finally got some rain in *****, several of the nails on the west facing wall started to rust and left rust streaks. Not all of the nails, but dozens were rusting. I mentioned this to Jay when he came back a few months later to finish the job and seemed confused as to why this happened. We discussed how this happened and he blamed it on the wood. Unfortunately this could not explain why other nails on the same wall were not rusting. I made a point to make sure he used the proper nails on the rest of the job so we wouldn’t run into the same problem. After the siding was installed and the job was completed, it had been a few months without rain which we ended up getting in early Fall. This moisture unfortunately revealed that Jay had used the wrong nails on the rest of the shop and every single nail head has now rusted. Not only did he not use hot dipped galvanized nails he didn’t used ring shanked nails as well. I pulled the nails and they were bright, common framing nails.
