      Your company took advantage of my elderly mother. She is on a fixed income and charging her $40 month to spray bugs four times per year is ridiculous. Im not saying youre over priced or provide bad service, Im sure someone with a larger house and disposable income would appreciate it. but she said she was quoted $300 and she said no I cant afford it. The sales person said they had a special running and she thought she was going to pay $40 per application, but shes paying that per month, totaling $480. I had her cancel all future payments. Your sales people should be instructed to not take advantage of older customers. As your phone agent states, you didnt force her to sign, but there is no way she would agree to pay that amount. She doesnt even have cable TV because she cant afford it, and since she is home the majority of the time it would be more useful than spraying for bugs.

After conducting a thorough investigation, we were able to locate the recorded calls between you and ****** on March 26th at 4:06 PM and 4:28 PM. It was difficult to listen to, as you were accusatory, saying that we were taking advantage. You advised that your mother has had her bank stop all payments and then followed that up with threats about having a "blast" on social media if we pursued collections.

      Regarding your comments about taking advantage of elderly individuals, I want to assure you that we never intend to treat any customer unfairly or exploit their circumstances. We take great pride in serving our local community, including the senior population, and we value their trust and loyalty.

      You referred to our treatment of seniors as ********. However, doing what you suggest and not serving this portion of our local community or treating them differently would be Agist, and we refuse to treat anyone like they are less than another. If your situation is critical or needs a power-of-attorney transfer, that has nothing to do with us or our business. I sincerely wish you and your mother both good health and joy.

      I am rejecting this response because:

      I take issue with their second response.  They act as if they are being attacked and I'm trying to get my mother service for free.  My concern was and still is that their sales practice, though effective, convinced my mother to sign up for something she can't afford.  Even when I read the contract it isn't clear.  Initial charge of $299 was reduced to $70.  Then in the Payment Information section it indicates Barrier can charge her card after each service.  This aligns with her understanding she would bay $70 for the initial then $40 for each quarterly application, which is still a lot of money to her.

      Regarding their response:

      1. I doubt it was difficult to listen to the recording of or conversation.  Yes, I was upset, but never used profanity or raised my voice, and their use of the word "threat" about blasting them on social media is childish, and meant to make themselves look like they are the ones being attacked or taken advantage of.

      2. Them insinuating that that I might want to seek obtaining a power-of-attorney is uncalled for, but shows how low they will go to discredit and deflect attention and responsibility from themselves.

      As I was typing this I realized that Barrier Pest had no way of knowing my mothers financial situation at the time they sold her this contract.  I guess I was just hoping that once I explained her situation they would allow her to end the contract with no penalty.

      Regarding the recording of our conversation, I understand your belief that you maintained professionalism without using profanity or raising your voice. However, the facts stand that you did threaten to blast us on social media. You also referred to our treatment of seniors as ********.

      We attempted to assist a kind woman, our neighbor, and your mother with her pest issues. You correctly pointed out that we would not know customers financial situations. This underpins our statement that we will do everything we can to treat everyone equally. We cannot convince anyone to do anything, we simply offer what we provide, and they make their choice. We do not allow any strong-arming of our friends and neighbors; if you have evidence this has occurred, please contact us directly so that we may address this.

      Regarding the mention of obtaining a power-of-attorney: If your situation is critical or needs a power-of-attorney transfer, that has nothing to do with us or our business. I sincerely wish you and your mother both good health and joy. I promise you this was meant with sincerity and compassion. I acknowledge your perspective that it may have been perceived as uncalled for. Our intention was to explore potential solutions to address your concerns, although I understand your perspective on this matter.

      Our agreement is one page long, clear, and concise. As shown in the attached images, August's charge was $70, and every month after that, it showed a clear $40 charge (Sept$40, Oct$40, and so forth). As you mentioned, the initial discount of $229 was provided, assisting ***** with an enormous discount to help her get started.
      To further clarify, the agreement states: If the customer has opted to pay for services monthly, the customer agrees to keep ACH or credit card payment information updated. If at any time the customer fails to update payment information, your payment schedule and rate will be changed to quarterly. As well as Payment shall be due every 30 days while services shall be performed according to the approximate schedule illustrated above.

      I appreciate your forthrightness in expressing your concerns, and I assure you that we will do our best to address them and find a resolution that meets your needs. However, you will need to contact us directly; we cannot make any changes through BBB.

      I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and as requested I contacted them directly.  The person on the phone was very friendly, we reviewed the concern and when we accidently got disconnected she quickly called me back.  I find the resolution is satisfactory to me, and if you're looking for pest control and can afford it I would recommend their company.

      I've attached the signed agreement, as well as the verbiage within the contract indicating the initial discount to be applied in the case of an early termination of the agreement.

      This claim is baseless, and *****/****** was also verbally abusive to our customer service girl. We are a small family-owned local only business. There were at no point any deceptive or crooked dealings with this customer, and her accusations are unfounded and easily proven incorrect. *****/****** is trying to spitefully abuse the BBB system.

      I hired barrier pest controls services a few years ago and have always had problems with them not fully completing services/doing them correctly. I just never got around to canceling them. On May 4 2023 after a couple of cancellations from them they went to my home to service it. When I noticed he arrived, I messaged barrier that the back yard could not be done. There is also a sign on my gate not to open due to dog being inside. The tech still went into my backyard and let my dog out. I had to leave work and rush home to find her. I also had to ask my neighbors to help until I got there. I messaged barrier and told them the tech let my dog out. Barrier responded but I was so frustrated that I did not respond back. Even after me stating back yard cannot be done, and they let my dog out, the tech still proceeded to renter my yard. I left it alone at that point but another pest control company came out that next week and pointed out all of the spider webs and wasp nests around my home still ( I seen them as well). I hired a new company to do the job that barrier did not do. I had years of telling them I can see the te bs not doing the job right etc and have those messages. I also have neighbors that have the same complaints as me and have switched companies as well. They are now threatening to lien my home and send me to collections for a service I told them not to do, they let my dog out which it took hours to find her and they did not efficiently do the job and I told them not to do it.

      Hello. I did not see that Barrier Pest control responded to the BBB. My issue is still unresolved as I have not received not one communication from them about resolving them trying to lien my home. I do not agree on paying for a full service that was not given and to the fact that the technician still went into my backyard after he knew I did not want him to.

      A huge benefit of being a small, local, and family-owned company is that its easy to keep detailed records (Only 4 of us are in the office). Ive looked over our past communications with *******, and have noted a few thingsbelow that will be the full extent of our communications over the years. Ill attach the agreement at the very bottom.






      Service Agreement and ***************s:
      ******* was initially approached for a service agreement in October 2019 but didn't sign any contract then. It looks like she wasn't home or didn't respond to messages.
      Fast forward to August 2021, a new service agreement was sent to *******, which she eventually signed on 08/31/2021, and the initial service was performed the same day.
      Payments:
      ******* was initially charged $99 for the service in September 2021 and was informed of an additional card payment surcharge, which was waived for that transaction.
      Later in October and November 2021, she was repeatedly reminded about an outstanding balance of $119. Various methods to make the payment were communicated.
      Appointment Scheduling:
      ******* received reminders for her Quarterly Pest Control services. In January 2022, due to snow around her house, she requested a change of date for the service, indicating that she didn't believe the service would be effective with the snow. Barrier was accommodating and offered to push the appointment to a later date.
      Communication Channels:
      Barrier used multiple communication channels to stay in touch with *******, including emails, SMS, voice messages, and physical letters. A mix of appointment reminders, service notifications, and payment reminders was communicated through these channels.
      There were instances where communication was one-sided (e.g., emails with 0 opens and 0 clicks), suggesting ******* might not always check or engage with all the messages sent to her.
      Consistent Communication:
      Barrier consistently communicated with ******* through emails, SMS, and voice messages.
      Notably, appointment reminders, service notifications, and payment-due notifications were sent out regularly, illustrating that we value transparency and clear communication.
      Flexible Scheduling:
      When ******* mentioned concerns about the effectiveness of the service due to the snow around the house, we were willing to adjust the date for her convenience.
      Clear Payment Structure and Assistance:
      Barrier made significant efforts to remind ******* about due payments, offered various payment methods, and even provided a direct contact number for payment arrangements.
      Our office went the extra mile by waiving a $3.00 surcharge for card payments when ******* wasnt aware of it.
      Contract and Service Agreements:
      ******* received service agreements and contracts to sign, showing transparency in the services offered.
      ******* did sign a service agreement on 08/31/2021.
        The agreement indicates an early cancellation fee of $150 and that it is for 1 year of services.
        The agreement indicates the $3 minimum surcharge on card transactions.
      Attempted Service Calls:
      Records show instances where technicians arrived for service, but ******* wasn't home or didn't answer the door.
      Past Interactions:
      There were prior interactions in 2019 and 2020, which indicate *******'s long-standing relationship with the company.
      ******* had previously canceled a Quarterly Pest Control Subscription in November 2019 due to financial reasons.

      You didnt hear from me because I was done with not properly receiving the service that I was paying for. How many times did i tell you guys over time that stuff wasnt done because I was watching the technicians on the camera and all you could say was that you would come back. Is that great customer service to you guys? Not doing the job and excusing it with coming out to do a free re-service. That time the service was rescheduled twice. The last one I didnt realize the date. There was a sign not to open the gate. What is the excuse for that? You cannot charge me for a service that was not completed. I have the other companies reports of everything they seen after the supposed service that I received. You say it was done but it wasnt. You can send it to collections but I will be sure to fight it and make sure I leave all of my reviews of just how great of a service your company provides. I have plenty of neighbors in my subdivision that has had the same experience with your company and have changed.

      *******, I looked over the prior text messages on your account.  On 4/28 we advised that due to high wind speeds we had to reschedule for 5/4.  We received no response from you.  On 5/4 at 10:10 am we got a text from you stating we could not do the back yard, at 10:11am we said ok and asked when a good day would be (not realizing at the time that the technician had already started), at 10:13 you text to say the technician let the dog out.  There was no other communication between 5/4 and 7/6 other than our automatic balance reminders.  on 7/7 you advised that you told us service in the yard could not be done during the last service.  We offered a free retreatment but never got a response.  My technician checked in at your house at 10:00am on 5/4, we did not get a response from you until 10 minutes later advising not to go in the back after the technician had already started service. The office called the technician and he advised that he never saw a dog, no dog barking, he closed all of the gates behind him as he came and went. You also never advised that the service was not completed or something was missed.  We sent out a reminder several days before the appointment advising when we were coming out and offered free retreatments when you expressed you were not satisfied.  At no point in the last 2 months did you advise you were not happy with the service or respond to any of our balance reminders.  You are welcome to email us video of the technician letting your dog out for consideration.  We will move forward with the collections process if the balance remains unpaid.

      Im sorry but you cant send something to a third party collection agency for a service that was not completed. I have plenty of recordings of you guys not fully doing the job each time you have came out. Especially the last time when I requested the service not to be done and your business still came onto my property opened a gate that has a sign that it shouldnt be opened because theres a dog inside. He let my dog out and after I still told you guys my dog was left out he still came back onto my property without my consent. Even then no wasp nests were taken down webs were still everywhere and this has been every time the service has been performed. Im sorry but you can charge for a service that was not done and especially coming onto my property and opening a gate that specifically stated not to because theres a dog inside. Are you guys going to pay for the grooming bill since my puppy was found hours later in the field muddy?

      The day of the treatment I clearly stated the service couldnt be done. The tech went to my house and went through the back gate when there was clearly a sign not to open  dog inside and I had already stated not to perform service. The techs never clearly cleaned spider webs did not take down wasps nest or spray all the way around the house. I have complained about that many times since using you guys. I will not use your services again and since service was performed after I stated it couldnt be done my dog was let out and I spent hours looking for her and found her wet and dirty in a ditch and she is an inside dog you charging me is unjust.

      Hello *******! I understand your frustration so I went ahead and looked into the account to see if there was anything more we could do to ensure that you are getting the best results possible. While looking over the account I did find that your quarterly treatments had been rescheduled several times putting the treatments over 90 days apart. Its important that the treatments be scheduled consistently as with all pesticides they do break down over time and become ineffective at killing pests which is why we come out every 90 days to apply. Longer that 90 days apart and we find that the pests are able to get near the home and start to repopulate again. Your plan does offer free retreatments any time you need them. It does not look like you have utilized this option much, please remember that we do not know that you are having problems in between visits unless you let us know, we are always happy to send a technician out inbetween visits at no additional cost to you if needed. The treatment scheduled for 9/1/22 does appear to be your last treatment under contract so after tomorrows treatment if you choose to you can cancel with no penalty.

      I am rejecting this response because:

      This response has nothing to do with the complaint at hand. The service agreement was only for a year and has nothing to do with this either. The complaint at hand is that the technician went into my gated yard even though a sign was up not to open dog inside. He still reentered after letting my dog out and I advised the office that services in the back could not be done. I am not arguing that the service wasnt somewhat performed. I am complaining that he went into my gate even though the sign was up. Still reentered my gate after exiting when I advised that my dog was let out and service could not be performed in the back. Big issue reentering someones back yard after telling them not to. Spider webs were not removed, wasp nests were not removed. The full service was not given and I explained that in long messages. The business did nothing to attempt to make it right but state they could come back out. I have had to have them come back out before and that did nothing. I cannot be charged for a service that was not fully completed and when a business goes into my yard after telling them not to. It is not just to charge me the full price of service when it was not completed.

      On 4/28/2023, we informed you about the upcoming service on 5/4/23. On the day of the service at 10:10am, you indicated you believed it was for the following day and that we could not treat the back yard. We did offer to reschedule immediately upon receiving your message. However, ************** had already initiated the treatment process at the time of your message. It was 2 minutes later at 10:13am, that you replied to us, that the technician had let your dog out. We did not receive a follow up message to our text, our automated calls, or emails, about your balance, the dog, or about the partially completed service.
      Your safety and the well-being of your pets are of utmost importance to us. While ************** reported not seeing a dog or letting one out, we take your claim seriously. When we spoke, you stated you had video evidence, so we requested that you send that to us and that we would reimburse you for the grooming of your dog. However we did not receive any such evidence, despite our request. We kindly request you to share it with us, as this will help us review the situation and provide necessary training to our staff. Additionally, if the video confirms the technician's mistake, we are committed to covering the grooming bill, as previously mentioned.
      We aim to maintain a transparent relationship with our clients and work together to find amicable solutions.
      There is nothing that can be done regarding the lein, as we had attempted to reach an amicable solution to this for a VERY long time before we were forced to take that step. It is now, unfortunately, out of our hands.

      April or May of 2021 a flyer was placed on our door from Barrier Pest Control. At the time we had a problem with Box Elder Bugs. My son spoke to the sales man about spraying one time and then we could decide if we wanted to the four times a year package. We decided not to go with the package . A few months passed and Barrier emailed stating they would be out again. I called them and stated we didn't want their service and was told that we signed a contract . Neither myself or my son signed a contract. They went ahead and sprayed and billed me another $95. A few more months went bye and the same thing with another $95. I called in and told Barrier that I did not want their services and that we never signed a contract. I was then told that she would email me a copy of the contract that was for quarterly spraying every 3-4 months. I never received an email. The next time they contacted me about coming out and spraying, I was told that I had to do the initial visit plus 4 additional visits. So now they were telling me I had to do 5. I told them I could not afford their service at this time and that I never received an email with a copy of their contract. They sent a man out anyway and when he arrived, a friend told them that I could not afford their service at this time. The man left and five days later I get a **** for $150.00 for a cancelation fee. I have never signed a contract with them and every time I talk to them I get a different story. I just want them to go away and leave me alone. I want this account corrected to show zero amount owing and I do not want this on my credit.

      The issue resolves on service performance and contract interpretation. Barrier was engaged to spray for pests around home. As part of sales pitch, Barrier stated orally that they would return in 4-6 weeks. That is was essential to do so. We contacted them after 6 weeks but no reply. They did not communicate to us until about 10 weeks later. We advised them that the contract was cancelled as the Barrier had breached the terms. Their viewpoint is the oral communication is moot and are entirely relying upon the written language of the contract. We have refused to pay their termination fee of $149. They turned over the balance to ******************** which is seeking $179. Neither has a judgment from a court of competent jurisdiction. I'm not sure on what basis one thinks a debt exists. I think they should *** us in small claims court as a means of having a judge determine if parol evidence exist and applies. That seems reasonable.
