Programs

Orphan Acres, Inc. is directly beneficial to the community at large through their horse rescue and adoption programs and as an educational facility. The rescue averages 10,000 hours of volunteer help each year. Orphan Acres, Inc. provides educational and character-building activities for numerous community groups, which include around 450 volunteers from the University of Idaho and Washington State University organizations of future veterinarians, pre-vet clubs, collegiate horse clubs, animal science and wildlife majors. They also have a large number of volunteers from local groups. This averages about another 75 volunteers from FFA, 4H, churches, Upward Bound, Head Start, YMCA, Boy Scouts, community learning center and others interested in learning about the care of horses and other animals that are sent to us. In addition the community benefits through the classes and clinics offered to students from the universities, youth, adults and individuals with disabilities from the surrounding communities, all at no cost to the participants.Orphan Acres, Inc.takes in and rehabilitates animals whose owners are no longer willing or able to care for them. Today, they operate with between 80 and 90 horses on the property at any time. Since opening its doors in 1975, over ­4250 horses have come through their facility; 3500 of which have moved on to loving homes. Over the years, Orphan Acres, Inc. has nursed hundreds of horses back to proper health and proudly watched them flourish in their new lives. Any horse that requires long-term care is placed in our permanent herd and allowed to live out its retirement comfortably at the rescue.
