I contracted this company to do demo work, 3 flights of steps and replace floor joist on 2 floors of an investment property that I own. We met them at the property and I gave them a deposit check for $12,500 (half of the total amount agreed upon) on April 25, 2022. They said they wouldn't be able to start till that Friday. Demo did start then. They did a small support wall, and more demo was done on the 1st floor. The floor joist work and step work never started. They stated they needed 4-5 more days to finish up other jobs. They then sent a sub-contractor to start work, but he didn't start work either. Then the Campbell's stated they could do it themselves, but would need 2 more weeks before they could do it themselves. I asked for a refund, and Mrs. ******** sent me an invoice stating she would be only be refunding $8000. I told her that I thought $4500 was a bit much for only demo on 1 floor and picking up material ($300) and frame wall ($200). Nothing was done on the 2nd floor or 3rd floor (no demo, step removal or floor joist). I tried to negotiate and settle on $9000 instead of the $10,000 I thought I was owed. The Campbell only refunded $8300. Then the demo company that THEY hired, emailed me stating the were going to put a mechanic's lien on my house because they were no paid by the Campbell's. This is unacceptable. And I am still owed a minimal of $700.Business response

I am rejecting this response because: Campbell Construction would only give the demo company $3150 for their services. I had to pay $1600 for the demo company for them to not file a mechanical lien on my property. Campbell construction had $4200 in their possession and would not give the demo company any further money. Campbell construction charged us $300 for picking up material (they did NOT inform us of this charge) and $200 for framing a support wall. Therefore, they kept an additional $550 for doing absolutely NOTHING! They would not give the extra $550 to the demo company and decided to keep it for themselves. Unacceptable. Campbell construction would also, NOT sign a lien waiver for the $500 we were charged. Mrs. ******** gave the demo company the check for $3150 and was asked to sign a lien waiver and Mrs. ******** stated, "I'm not signing nothing". Then walked to her car and left. These people lied on us several occasions stated we did not want to pay, when in fact we had given them $12,500. They also did not want to compensate us for the 2 1/2 weeks we spent waiting on them to start work, which never happened. They stated they had been working with the demo company for a long period of time, but the demo company stated they had only worked with them on 1 other occasion. They also stated they treat all their subcontractors like family, but admitted they got all their subcontractors from the demo company that they had just met 2 months prior. I would not recommend anyone work with this company.
Sincerely,

Our position remains the same, We refunded the consumer $8300.00 and paid all contractors without penalty. We charged only for the work that was done and nothing more.Customer response

I am rejecting this response because: I, as the client had to pay the demo company because this company only gave a portion of the payment that they were billed for. They gave the demo company what THEY thought the demo company was owed. Even though the demo company requested $5250 from them. They also saw fit to keep what they wanted out of the deposit money, even though I thought I should have gotten more than $8300 of my $12,500 back. Campbell Construction gave me what they wanted as a refund, not what I was asking and also refused to sign a lien waiver. Again, this company only picked up material and put a support wall. They took the money they thought that should have, instead of being honorable and give the money back to unsatisfied customers.
Sincerely,
****** *****
