For the past two weeks, we've had All Trades building a backyard deck for us to support a hot tub. As you'll see, they initially promised 13 posts. They put in 5. When we called them on this, they said they didn't need the extra posts because they could use existing concrete footings from another deck and from the house. They had initially pledged to put in at least two more posts, but then said those weren't needed either because the foundation of the house (they said) came out into the yard and so the deck had a good foundation as is. When my wife dug down to show that wasn't the case, they became very agitated and said that it would take "5 hours" to put in an additional post and that we didn't trust them and abruptly walked off the job, leaving it about half finished and with a complete mess in our yard and materials in our garage that they didn't clean up. Two days before this, they said they needed more money to purchase additional materials. We grudgingly gave it to them because we wanted them to finish the work, but I said that that wasn't how to do business---THEY bid on the job, and if they needed more materials, that was on them, not us. We tried to accommodate them as much as possible. They wanted to be trusted, but they did nothing to validate that trust, having lied to us about the foundation. And whether we trusted them or not, we had a signed contract that they broke by walking off the job.
