Last winter, we had ice dams on our roof. The roof was over 20 years old and did not have an ice shield, so it was understandable. We decided to get a new roof and received quotes from several companies. We ended up going with Horizon Restoration because of the thoroughness of their inspection and detail. This September, Horizon Restoration installed a new roof and gutters on both our house and garage for roughly $10,000. This January, after a much milder winter than last, we had another ice dam on our roof. We immediately contacted Horizon Restoration and they were able to come out the next weekend. We had leaks and water damage on every Northern and Eastern facing walls and ceilings of our second floor, in addition to water damage in the attic. A representative from Horizon came out with a moisture detector and confirmed moisture in the ceilings of four walls on our second floor. He said that he would discuss this with his project manager and get back to us soon. A week later he gave us a call to inform us that there is nothing that could be done to prevent ice dams on our home due to the slope of our roof. This was something that would have been extremely helpful to know BEFORE we put a new roof on our house, so we could look for a long term solution to the problem. Having dealt with ice dams the winter before, a long term solution was definitely the answer we were looking for. One of the quotes we received was from a metal roofing company, something that I mentioned during Horizons proposal. Horizons representative said that a metal roof is great, but that their roof would be just as reliable because they were installing an ice shield, something our old roof didnt have. They offered to remove our gutter guards or put up heating coils. We just really wish that the theres nothing you can do because the slope of your roof excuse was mentioned before this all began. Now we are stuck with a brand new $10,000 roof that doesnt solve the problem we bought it for.
