**** ************************** staff made an error while filing my and my husband's joint 2020 tax return in the year 2021. Two numbers were transposed in my husband's salary and, as a result, our taxes were calculated incorrectly. This resulted in an underpayment. The *** caught the error in March of 2022 and notified us via email that we owed a substantial amount of money for the underpayment and penalties. Upon receiving the initial notification from the ***, I immediately notified **** via email. He responded quickly that an error was made, sent me an amended return for federal and state, and sent a letter to both agencies requesting that the penalties be waived. My husband and I signed the amended returns and mailed them immediately with checks for the underpayment amounts owed to both while waiting for their responses on the request to waive the penalties. We were eventually notified that the federal government will not be waiving the penalty. We have not heard yet from the state of ********.While ****'s initial response to me about this issue was quick, his responses to my follow up emails has been spotty, at best. The state and federal governments have only been communicating with me, not ****. I've been sharing all of their letters with him and asking if and how to respond. His lack of responsiveness has been very concerning. When he has responded, it's only been after multiple follow *** by me and his responses are typically one or two unclear sentences. As of today (6/11/2022), the voicemail I left for **** on 5/26/22 still has not been returned, not the emails I sent on 5/15/22 and 5/20/22.At this time, the outstanding issue is the penalties. In order to avoid additional interest, we have paid the federal penalty of $1,730. $218.92 is owed to the state of **. We believe Weinberg, ********************************************* should reimburse us since both are due to their error.
