In about mid-November, we gave ********************* of Straight Line Painting a cash deposit of $400 to tile our kitchen. We were still picking up the tile. We arranged that he would start sometime before Christmas, but then he notified us that he and his entire family had covid. We then agreed that he would start when they got better. I contacted him in early January and we agreed he would start Jan. 11. When I contacted him before that date to confirm, he said he had another job that was running long. We discussed start dates. A few days before the new start date, he contacted me to say his truck was damaged and he would start a day late, but then kept claiming his truck was broke and pushing the date. We agreed he would start the following Mon. I texted him the previous Fri., ***, and *** to get him to confirm a start time. He did not respond. I texted him on Monday. Late in the day, he said his father was in the hospital and "he did not have his phone on him" so had been unable to contact me. I told him I wanted the deposit back. First he said yes, and that he would venmo it to me, but never did. After multiple discussions, he asked if he could still do the job. He said he could start that Saturday. I said yes, forgetting in the moment I had a previous appointment. I texted him Fri night, said it was ok if this wouldn't work, but could he start later in the day on Sat. He said sure how about Monday. I agreed. That Monday, he never showed up. After I repeatedly texted him, he said he "forgot" he had another job that day. I demanded my deposit back. He said he would return it the next day at 1 p.m. The next day he did not show up. He said he was on a job in a town far away, but would drop it off at my house at 5 p.m. He did not show up at 5 p.m. He said he was stuck in traffic. He never showed up. He has since blocked me from his company's ******** website, refused to answer my calls or emails, and has friends texting me arguing about this.
