I hired him to do rehab after a fire. He said he was going to do the job, but he hired 3 random people from **** *****. They did not do the job right and quit on the job.

      Business response

      05/17/2022

At the time of signing the contract which is attached, **** informed me that his parents were electricians and had rental property so they would handle all plumbing and electric work. He continued on and stated that they were more like slum lords and their finish work was not very nice so he only needed someone to complete the finish work. He wanted us to wash all the walls down because his mom was painting killz over the smoke. As per the attached contract, **** was supposed to pay half down when we started. Instead he told me he was out of town in Oklahoma. Although he orginally said his parents would complete all electric, once we started he requested us to do the electric work in a room that had no power, all the switches and outlets that his mom and dad had taken apart and not put back together. Additionally, he wanted all the outlets and switches changed and wanted us to correct the kitchen lighting they had installed crooked. I told him it would cost extra and he said no problem.
Then after 6 days of working on the job, he still had not given me the half down. I cornered him at the casino and was able to get a partial amount.  He still owed me $874 in materials at this point and did not reimburse me. At this point, he told me to pick out paint so I went with agreeable gray because it is the most popular at this time. This brought the total in materials owed to $1239. After this, John's mom showed up and requested I put together a bed for her to sleep on. I texted her a picture of the completed bed and she texted back for me to put sheets on it and rest well (also attached). Additionally, **** informed me that his mom was handling the ordering of the cabinets even though I told him I needed to handle it. Everyday John's mom added more work and told us we could not complete the items per our contract until we did additional items that were not part of the contract. At one point we found termite damage and they requested that to be fixed as well.
***** mom ordered cabinets that were an extra 44 inches which led to more work that was not part of the contract. She had us install a sink in the garage, extra framing, and various other things that were not part of the contract.
In regards to hiring 3 random people from **** *****, it is common practice in construction to hire local rather than spend money and time for all my help to drive 9 hours to do a job. I interviewed 15 people before selecting the ones I did and I supervised all the work. **** was perfectly happy with the work until I mentioned to him the amount of change orders for all the extra work. In total, we worked 18 days (not including my drive time) or my helper that I brought along. As far as I am concerned **** owes me $7463 in completed work not specified in the contract and $1239 in materials as well as damages due to breach of contract..
