Date: December 21, 2021 Amount paid: $78 Nature of dispute: Seeking refund of payment after misinformation regarding insurance I received routine cleanings at West Main Dental on January 2021 and July 14, 2021. When I was asked about scheduling the next visit after my dental cleaning on July 14, 2021, I stated I would be moving out of state on January 1, 2022, so I would no longer need to schedule dental visits at West Main Dental. After checking my history, I was told that as long as my visits were scheduled 4-6 months apart, insurance would pay for the visit. Thus, I scheduled a visit on December 20, 2021 after being told insurance would cover the cost. I recently received a bill (see attached) for $78 due to the frequency of visits (3 in one year). Upon calling my insurance company, I was told that my benefits were according to the calendar year (2 visits per year), but my dental office was completely unaware of this. They believed that the benefits were according to the academic calendar year (because I was a student at the time). The dental office admitted fault (see attached History 2 PDF), but then still stated I needed to pay the bill. They did not try to resolve the problem. I would not have scheduled the visit in December 2021 had I been correctly informed of my benefits. Moreover, I was told by my insurance company that a FaxBack of my specific benefits was only filed twice by West Main Dental throughout my three years of visiting this establishment: once on September 18, 2018 and the second on the day that I complained about the misinformation I received regarding my insurance (February 7, 2022). Thus, West Main Dental had not verified my insurance benefits before telling me insurance would cover the costs. I paid the bill on February 9, 2022. However, I would like a refund in the amount I paid ($78) to West Main Dental because I do not believe I should be charged for a negligent mistake that West Main Dental made.
