I contacted Taft Built in July 2021 to remodel the basement to my new home, which I had purchased with a move-in date of Dec 28, 2021. I wanted to get the remodelling work started as early as possible once I moved in. ***** the owner, gave me a final proposal on Sep 14, 2021 for $51,792.42 which we approved the same day. We made a first payment of $23,306.59 on Sep 16th, a second payment of $25,896.21 on Nov 5, 2021 and a final payment of $2,589.62 on Dec 14, 2021. Per ***** work was supposed to start on Jan 4th, 2022. I did not see anyone come in so I **** him a message on Jan 5th for which he responded that they would begin framing from the Monday after. No one showed up and **** completely stopped responding to any form of communication (we tried contacting him via text, email on his Builtrend app, messaged and emailed his wife who run the company with him- ******************* , even **** a note on Instagram). Finally, on Jan 29, 2022, I **** him a not saying if could not being my work latest by the second week of Feb, I would like a refund. We still did not get a response. On Feb 1, 2022, we noticed that all of his social media presence (website, ******************* had all disappeared, so we got concerned and filed a report with the ****************** (#WRPC2200085). The officer contacted ***** got back to me and told me that **** would get in touch with me by the end of the day and he was apparently in trouble with his business but had an obligation to refund my money. **** **** me an email the following day and told me that he was going to declare bankruptcy. I believe this is a case of fraud as he asked us money as late through November and December and even told me that he was all set to start work when we messaged me the first week of January. There has been no tangible work done on my basement so far. He had told us that he would have secured the permits for this work and pre-ordered material but I am not aware if either of these were actually done.Initial Complaint

My wife and I hired ***************** of TaftBuilt to complete a basement remodel. ***************** accepted our payment of $37,174.50 on December 14, 2021 via wepay.com. Since then, we have heard nothing from him. I have sent texts, emails, and calls, all of which I have documented. I had one email back several weeks ago saying he had been ill but that he was returning to work. He still has not contacted me. I have sent emails requesting the deposit back, but I have still not heard anything from him.Any help is appreciated!Thank you-***
