I brought my car into Wilmette Auto Care on April 25, 2023 at approximately 9:15am for an issue with the brakes. The shop owner, ***********************, said that he would call me after he looked at the car. He called me at approximately 11am that morning and said that the left brake caliper had frozen up and locked the brake, resulting in the brake pad becoming worn. He said the right side was fine for now and we could get away with doing only the left side. He quoted me a price of $960. He also said that he did an oil change for $140, which was done without my knowledge or consent. I consented to the brake job for $960 verbally over the phone. At around 4pm on 4/25, ************** called me again to say that the calipers came in packets of 2 and costed around $400 a piece, so they went ahead and did both brakes. The cost was now $1944.90. This additional work had been done without my consent or knowledge. I arrived at the office at around 5:30pm and told ************** that I was disappointed that nobody had called me before doing the extra work. I consented to $960 worth of work and he said he would only do one of the brakes, but he went ahead and did both without telling me. He told me that the calipers came in packets of 2 so he had to do both brakes (this was never discussed with me prior). He told me that the right side would have gone out in the next couple of months anyway in his experience. I reiterated that they should have called me prior and that I did not authorize this work. I had authorized work for the price of $960 and this is more than double what I had agreed to.
