On November 1, my wife and I picked up our dog, Scout, from Richlene Kennels after they had boarded her for 9 days. This was the second time that we had boarded Scout at Richlene. The first time was for 7 days last April. In April, because they were busy, we were told that Scout would be with the "day-care dogs". I agreed as long as she was kept separate from large and/or ****** active dogs. Scout is very active, walks 3-4 miles daily, and is still able to catch chipmunks but she is 13 years old and deaf. When we picked her up from this first boarding, we were told that she had seemingly enjoyed lounging with some of the day-care dogs on the couch. When we picked her up this time, the attendant informed us that she had removed Scout from the day-care area because one of the dogs had "puppy brain". We were also told that she had soiled her bedding which is the first time that has happened since she was house-broken. When the attendant brought her out to us, she had a noticeable weakness and wobble in her walk which we attributed to lack of exercise. By the time that we got her home, we realized that something was very wrong. She was wobbling even more and dragging both of her hind feet as she attempted to walk. The next morning, we obtained an emergency appointment with our veterinarian at ********************************. Scout was kept for observation, x-rayed, and diagnosed with a spinal cord injury. She is now on three types of medication, on exercise restrictions and cage rest for 6-8 weeks. Our veterinarian, ***************************, informed my wife that if her condition worsens then the most viable option will be to have her euthanized. It is difficult for us to understand how Scout could have received such an injury unless through the action of an employee or another dog. When I questioned the owner, ****, concerning *****'s care she defensively responded that the dogs are never allowed together which contradicts what we were previously told.
