I am filing this complaint on behalf of my mother, *********************, ***********************************************************. She is currently in a nursing home recovering from a broken hip. On 12/29/21, she paid $235.00 to KPC Media/The Auburn Evening Star newspaper for a one year subscription from 1/16/22 to 1/16/23. She canceled the subscription on7/24/22 as she was losing her sight and could no longer read the paper. (Her account number was ******* She called the circulation office about her refund. She figured it out by the day and concluded that she was due $112.50 for using 27 of the 52 weeks she had paid for. The person in the office said that they would only give her $71 as a refund and she replied that was unacceptable and asked to talk to the department manager. She didn't answer, but my mother left her a voice mail requesting a call. No response. The next week in the mail, she received a check for $71.00. She wrote refused on the check and returned it along with a letter detailing how she came to the $112.50. She also called and again, got no return call. I called them in September and the person I talked to said she would either get the $71 or nothing. She said that my mother had paid her bill a month late in January 2021 so they were deducting that from what they owed her. This is untrue. The had the wrong end date of her subscription and she had called their office and discussed this with them at that time and paid what was owed, when it was owed, The person I talked to also said that because the normal subscription rate was $299 and they had discounted the rate to $235 for my mother, that they were taking the $64 dollar reduction out of the amount she was due. I asked to speak to the department manager and again was given a voice mail and got no return call. My mother paid for the product, notified them of the termination, and should receive the refund for the amount of product not used. I have been a long time subscriber to this daily newspaper. I pay for delivery of the paper 6 days a week. I have only been getting 1, maybe 2 papers delivered each week. I have called customer service probably ***** times and am always given an excuse as to why my paper is not delivered. I have pre-paid for 3 months of delivery and they refuse to credit my account and always tell me that they will deliver my papers a day late with the current days paper.. which never happens. I have left voice mails and sent emails to the circulation manager with no response.Initial Complaint

On November 30, 2021 our subscription was to expire . Payment was paid November 24, 2021. We paid $72.00 for 3 months which is to expire December 30, 2021. We cancelled our subscription on October 27 because we had already missed 15 days of the paper. We left a message expecting our check within 7 to 10 days. Called again on November 12 and they said they would make sure manager would take care of the manner. Again called on November 29 with no response. We left a message. Called again December 1 to try and get some kind of response but had to leave a message AGAIN. Would just like our refund due to us!Customer response

First of all this is an update and correction of the material provided to you. It was our error stating the subscription was to expire November 30. The date it expired was September 30, 2021 and the date payment was paid was September 24. The complaint number is #********. We are very sorry for the error on our part. The other is correct. Now for the update. On December 3, we received a check for $35.20. This amounts to a refund from November 25 to December 30. We tried to call 3 times on December 3 to try and talk to someone so we could settle and find out their explanation for the amount of the check. We left messages each time and have yet to hear from them. We received 12 issues of the paper from September 30 to the cancellation date of October 27. Again I had to leave a message on that date so they should have had reference to the call. I feel we are due more than $35.20 when we paid $72.00 and received 12 papers. If you any more information please contact us. Thank you for your help and we are very sorry for the error on the dates. We do have documentation.
