This guy answered my service request ************** to do A/C repair. He seemed very knowledgeable when I spoke to him by phone.he said I needed R-22 Freon. When he came out he said I needed a sealant , then a new fan motor . After several hours he left . Later that evening my air still is bot working . He comes back out and says now I need a circuit board at 6pm. I paid over $****. I gave lost faith he is able to diagnose the situation. I will not feel comfortable to continue working with him after 4 hrs of guessing . He was pleasant but I am left speechless. He wanted all cash but I paid by check & cash . An expensive lesson learned .

      Business response

Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2022/07/22) */ I received a notification **************** for ac repair services. When I received the lead, it stated that the line was freezing up, and it was an r-22 system. I spoke with my customer on the phone and I explained that when a system is freezing up, it's either a refrigerant problem or an airflow problem. I explained that if it needed refrigerant, in most cases I have seen, it's usually only a pound or two low. I asked the customer to turn the air conditioner off at the thermostat, and to set the fan to on. The customer states that she would do that. I arrived at the home and inspected the outdoor unit. The unit was off, so whatever I've had built up had melted. I hooked up my gauges. When a unit has been off for a while, the refrigerant inside the system will become the ambient outside temperature. For every temperature, there is a specific pressure the refrigerant should be at. I don't recall the exact ambient temperature, but it was above 80 degrees. At 80 degrees, the pressure of r-22 is 143.6 psig. I was measuring about 30 psig. This told me two things about this unit. 1, the unit was severely undercharged and 2, it had a leak. In a perfect world, an air conditioning system is a sealed system and it won't ever need more refrigerant once it has the proper amount, however, over time, corrosion and rust cause pin hole leaks. I explained this to my customer, stating that it would only lose that much refrigerant if there were a leak. I suggested the use of a leak sealant in order to protect her investment of the r-22 she was about to purchase. I gave her the option to say no. She told me to go ahead and do it. After I get the unit to a proper charge, which took 4 pounds, since the unit was nearly empty, I was still noticing the line freeze up. Only at this point did I suspect an airflow problem. My customer told me the fan was running all night, and I had no reason to not believe her. I entered the basement and could hear a humming, but the blower fan was not operating. I explained that in most cases, the capacitor goes bad and I would check it. I checked the capacitor and it measured within the proper range. Next I checked the fan. The fan had bad windings and wasn't allowing electricity to flow through it properly. When an electrical component fails, it pulls extra amperage through the entire circuit, and everything attached could potentially fail. The circuit board had no circuit protect (fuse) and that is a bad design on the manufacturer. I changed out the fan motor, and put everything back where it was supposed to be, and the unit started running. I went back outside to assess the outdoor unit once more. The pressures were good, and the unit was working properly. I left at this point. The customer sent me a text later, stating that the unit was freezing up again. Knowing that I just replaced the indoor fan, I made the assumption that the fan was working properly. I went to the outdoor unit once more and the pressures were still good, however Ice was building up on the suction line again. I entered the home, went to the basement, and the fan motor that I just replaced wasn't running again. I checked over my work 4 different times just to be absolutely certain that I didn't wire something wrong, and that the fan was in proper working order. After a thorough examination of the fan and capacitor, I started troubleshooting the circuit board. I closed the door switch, allowing electricity to flow through the circuit. I measured voltage at the "cool" terminal where the black fan lead hooks up. I was getting approximately 10 volts. The required voltage to run the fan is 120 volts. I continued to test other terminals on the circuit board and found that several others were not getting the correct voltage through the board. This, as I mentioned earlier, can happen when an electrical component fails and draws too much amperage, especially if there is no circuit protection. I offered to replace the circuit board for the customer first thing in the morning, free of charge, even though the fact that it failed was not my fault at all, but very poor design by the manufacturer. I even offered to install some inline fuses so that if another component fails, the new circuit board would be protected so that this wouldn't happen again. I offered these services at absolutely no additional charge to the customer. I was going to buy the new circuit board myself, install it, ensure everything was working properly, before I left. My offer to do so was declined. I honestly don't know what more I could have done. Consumer Response /* (3000, 7, 2022/07/25) */ (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.) Biz also stated during our phone conversation tues nite that he could the R-22 from the system and use the substitute freon equivalent to the R-22. When I ask if he wanted to check the system in the house downstairs, I was told there was no need to. Then an hour later I was told , yes the inside unit needed to be checked . My ?? Was ? Is this not how you diagnose the problem.? Several times repairman ask if I want him to Just leave ! Now I wish I had said YES ! On Wednesday evening after the unit still was not working I was told I would Not be charged for a 2nd diagnostic check since it was now discovered I need a circuit board ! I feel the employee didn't care about trying to save me money as he put too much Freon in the system as it ran the entire time he was down stairs trying to get fan motor in . I was told I would not be charged for additional excess Freon . Then the excuse was maybe the Filter was bad :etc . Employee was clueless . I was never told I would not be charged due the circuit board That was absolutely Not needed . Then to have a strange man call me late Wednesday nite and talk rudely and try to bully me into letting Cody come back Thursday morning and try to get my unit working . That was very shocking and unethical. Folks want to be cool & receive decent service . But , it's all about the $$$. ******************************************************************* I missed work 4 hrs tues morning already . It's okay. What's done is done . U owe me $$ back for a non completed service. U will never admit it cause u are not honest . Good luck with the next person u do shady services to. U won't last . Business Response /* (4000, 9, 2022/07/26) */ This customer has insulted me, blatantly lied about me (stating that I only accepted cash. I accept cash, check, ******, ******, and *******. I explained that I would accept any form of payment that was most convenient for her) and stopped payment on the check, causing $*** in bank fees. The unit was working properly when I repaired the fan. It's beyond my control that the circuit board failed. I completed 100% of the work asked of me, and even offered to do more work for free. I did offer to leave without charging anything. I'm still willing to replace the circuit board and complete the repair, but I am no longer willing to buy the part and install it for free. I am not willing to offer any refund because of the theft of $*** that has since took place.
