In May 2021 I hired R and J Painting, Ashland, ** to sand and stain my deck. What a mistake! To make a long story short, the product they applied to my deck has been peeling from my deck since June, just one month after its application. Because the company says they offered to fix the problem and I declined, they say that their one year guarantee is void. My money was wasted in trusting them to properly sand my deck and apply a product that would prevent peeling in the future. For reasons stated above, I cannot recommend this company to anyone.

******* did in fact hire our company to powerwash, sand and stain her deck. We did just that. After spending 3 hours powerwashing, 2 men spend 8 hours sanding the deck and then 2 coats of *************************** Arborcoat Solid Deck Stain was applied. We also informed her multiple times that the previous paint that had been poorly applied to her deck by the last painter was going to cause her life long peeling problems. When she reached out to us a month after us completing our contracted work telling us the deck was peeling we rushed over that very day to see what was happening. What we found was a tiny half inch chip in the corner of one single board of her 12x12 deck. More than likely due to something banging the deck board rather than the stain peeling. Regardless we offer to fix it which she refused, instead demanding that we refund her the full cost of what she paid for us to powerwash sand and stain her deck. Our estimates clearly state that we do offer guarantees on our work but the refusal to allow us to fix the work voids the guarantee. It also clearly states that we do not offer refunds due to the fact that what was paid has been used to pay for labor and materials, materials that we cannot recover since they are now permanently on her deck. Graciously though we still chose to rebate half the cost, keeping only enough to cover the hours of labor put in. ******* was not satisfied and has since been taking every opportunity to complain about our company. She is allowed her opinion of course but R&J Painting completed the work as contracted, offered to correct the tiny issue, and when they were not allowed to do this even went against company policy and rebated half the cost of the work. We have 20 year experience in the industry with many very happy repeat clients. Fortunately ******* has been our first and hopefully last dissatisfied customer.

The previous paint that was applied to my deck started to peel after two years. The ArborCoat that R & J Painting applied started peeling after one month. The tiny half inch chip described above is actually 1-3/4" x 10-1/2" , not caused by banging the deck board, but caused by the contractor peeling a piece of the ArborCoat he applied just one month earlier. Recently I contacted the manufacturer of ArborCoat who told me it sounds like a moisture problem; negligence of the contractor not checking the moisture content of the boards of the deck. Imagine the moisture in the boards after three hours of power washing on Saturday. heavy rain on Sunday, and hot humid weather through Wednesday when the contractor sanded and applied ArborCoat, not only on parts he sanded down to bare wood, but over the previous paint he could not and did not remove with his hand sander? What would it take to fix the problem caused by contractor's negligence. R & J Painting was given a real deal if they refunded me a full refund. Would they really want to come over and fix my deck as the product they applied continues to peel? A contractor with 20 years experience should know the importance of checking the moisture content of the wood.
