I reached out to the contractor 12/18/21 to remove 2 porches on a 3-family rental in **********, **. He went by there and said he could do it in the spring. I asked what it would be to save the porches (a buyer wanted), and met Carpenter's employee on 12/20/21 at which time he inspected them and said they were solid and sturdy, and just needed the beams replaced in the corners (caused by a former leak in the gutter). He sent me a quote to demo and remove deteriorated beams and the existing decking T&G boards (including permit), to replace the perimeter support beams, furnish and install new T&G wood on two decks, reset metal posts in three sections and sand, stain and ***** all newly installed decking. Price = $10,313 with a deposit of $3,437 to start (which I paid on Jan. 10th). Permit was filed on Jan. 6th; approved Jan. 19. He cancelled start a few times due to weather and personal issues. Finally, on Feb. 4 he starting taking down some of the wood. I went there on Sat. morning Feb 5, and saw that they had put blocks under the beams and had wood strewn everywhere in the yard, nails exposed. I told him I was concerned it was left a hazard he said he'd correct it (he never did). He showed me that there was a beam issue and contacted an engineer. Approx. Feb. 16, the engineer said they could be fixed cheaply, contractor came back with a price of $40,724, and refused to tear them down. I explained I had a price of $10,000 to tear them down so it did not make sense to do that. I requested my deposit back, and offered for him to do other work for me versus paying me back in cash. He looked at replacing some hardwood floors, but stopped communicating before giving me a price. The ********** house was left in complete disrepair and hazard, with a dislodged gutter causing further damage and wood with nails all over the yard. My money was not returned. I cannot rent it as he left it a danger, I lost the sale and can't sell it until rectified.Customer response
