Mr.Handyman was hired to patch 2 holes in a closet each no more than 2"x2" and replace the pole with a metal pole, replace 9 fire alarms and vent a dryer to the outside in the basement. The first day the technician after trying to replace a few fire alarms told me that a fellow technicians told him it was against the law to replace hard wired fire alarms with battery operated. Also even though there are 6 alarms in an areas where 3 are no more than 2 ft apart, they could not take any down. The original alarm installer an electrician(not with this company) obviously went overboard and charged for it and now it will be an ongoing charge for the extra. I will leave it at that. The price charged for the alarms that they had to provide was reasonable at $200 for 9. However a technician went out to Lowes to purchase the metal closet pole and dryer tube for venting(for an hour and half) and the company charged $378 for just the materials(plus the labor charge for the 1.5 hour shopping $178). I purchased the same dryer tubing when I had to vent it to another room as it had been for the old dryer (the plumber that installed the new told me it should be vented to the outside). Mine was only about 1/3 of the length but was less than $20. The company when questioned said they provide a warranty for everything they install and therefore **** it up. I was told when the **** was emailed I would get a breakdown on the materials purchased. I didn't, just a total cost for $578. The hourly labor cost is $118 and after 1 day at 5.5 hours, I was told another technician would have to replace the fire alarms with the hard wired alarms they provide the following week. That technician was here for 1.6 hours(reasonable). He told me that the fire alarms cost $200 (which is reasonable except that I do not know what the company tacked on for a warranty for the product on top) A warranty for fire alarms is not reasonable to tack on and taking advantage of customers when the company doesn't explain ahead that they charge customers **** up what they purchase. I was told that the **** would be $1700 at completion for just over 7 hours plus the materials. After asking the office to give me a breakdown for the materials purchased, I was told there was one slip charged twice and they took it out and subtracted a mailed coupon after I reminded them. Then the total was ******* which included a little more than ****% tax on the MARKED UP price of the materials which was changed to $578(from $800). I'm sure they don't pay taxes on the marked up price. All invoices should include a breakdown of material at least. If it was a reasonable **** up for the warranty I am sure they wouldn't have a problem listing it. Technicians also wore masks below nose.
