Don't fall for the "Best of" anything they promote. This guy often didn't show up, barely returned calls, did shoddy work, and when he said he was done, he hadn't done the ONE thing I called him about initially. Then the things he did do failed, including the chimney cap flying off in under two days. I moved because of a fire in my apartment building, and now I'm afraid to use my fireplace in my new home. Everyone was unprofessional. I have no clue why they have an A rating. If zero stars was possible, that would be it.Review from Jenny S

The owner came to our home for the $99 dryer vent cleaning I scheduled, told me the hose is blocked - without even looking at it - and said the cost would be $300-400. As we were walking to the back of the house to look at the dryer vent outside, he was extremely rude and said he has a $10 million dollar company and doesn’t have to put up with this. After telling him to get off my property, I called the office and was put on an extensive hold and eventually hung up. What type of business owner speaks to customers like this? He should be shut down.Review from Alan G

We purchased our home a year ago and were told by the previous owner that the fireplace was only decorative purposes and unuseable. As we really wanted to be able to have a working fireplace in the winter, we had our chimney and fireplace inspected by A Step in Time. The inspector was thorough, professional and provided photos and a repair/restore to working condition scope of work and quote. At the time, we were not quite ready to move into our new home, so we postponed our decision on the chimney repair. Fast forward a year later and this past month when I reached back to the owner, Ray Gessner, he said that he would honor the original scope and quote from a year ago. In addition, he sent out another member of his team to recheck my chimney and fireplace so that there would be no surprises in advance of the work that needed to be done. That brings me today and the outstanding work and service completed to restore our chimney and fireplace to safe, working condition. Harry arrived on time as promised in the morning and immediately removed the old defective damper and opened up the chimney that had been capped off. Harry continued throughout the day to complete work at the top, on the inside and outside of the chimney, including mounting a new top flue tile, damper, chimney cap and screen. The manager, Jeffrey, also came by early to check on the work being done and to reassure me of what to expect and to explain in detail what was going to be done. Finally, Harry was joined by Kyle, who carefully, methodically, and thoroughly parched the smoke chamber just above the fireplace. When Harry identified some additional damage inside the area near the top of the chimney, I received a call from the owner who said that his team would take care of this damage at no additional cost. There are still business teams & business owners out there that are committed to doing what's promised and doing it well. Fortunately, A Step in Time is such a business and Ray is such an owner.Review from Mar F

The guy Mike came to my house and did the work, but he stated that he had completed the work on my roof and other things that I had paid for. He completed the work on March, 2022, but on June, 2022, I had a small leak in my hallway ceiling. I called his office and asked if he would come out and check out the problem. He came out and stated that he would have a guy name David to come back within that week to fix the problem. I called the office back and asked when the guy David come to my house, I wanted him to come in side the house, so I can show him where the leak was at, plus I wanted documents stating that they had completed the work. I never seen anyone come to my house, neither my daughter. I called the office back and the young lady stated that the guy name David could come on July 1, 2022, between 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. No one never showed up that day. I called the office back and the young lady started giving me the running around, then I talked to Mike the owner and he started yelling stating that his person had come to my house already, I stated fine send me documents regarding this matter. He just kept on yelling stating that he was going to hang up the phone and that David had completed the job. I would never use this company again, because he is not a man or person of his word.Review from Victor T

I just received a threatening phone call from the owner of A Step in Time, Michael S*****. Mr. S***** was at my home this morning to give an estimate on a new Chimney Cap for my house and my neighbors house. I told the girl our neighbor wouldn't be home, she said that was fine. This morning my wife had a doctor's appointment and had to leave at 9:30, I had a work emergency and I called A Step in Time to let them know, the girl said it was ok. After a horrible interaction w/ my wife, Mr. S***** called my cell phone stating "You got something to say to me Bitch" he started yelling telling me noone was home to do the inspection (my wife was), and noone at my neighbors house, I tried to get a word in edge wise, but he continued to yell, told me he would track me down and smack me around. I am now getting the police involved as I feel threatened by this person! How can someone have a business that talks this way to people, how in the world!? He lost our business, my neighbors business, and I will makes sure he will lose many others in the area. This was the worst experience and interaction I've ever had with a contractor, he is truly a very unprofessional person! Do not use this service!A Step in Time Maryland LLC Response

Dear Victor T****, We are terribly sorry to read this complaint as it is vastly different than the complaint left on Google. At no such time in this case, or ever in over 30 years of doing business would we ever say such a thing, furthermore we take this as defamation and would gladly get our attorney involved. Initially your first complaint regarding the pellet stove was that in all of the years you were there nobody explained to you that a pellet stove needed to be away from the wall. The surface of a pellet stove can reach a temperature of 250 degrees Fahrenheit, and with this high heat, the boiler must be installed correctly to prevent damage to surrounding objects, including the walls. Whether you are replacing your old pellet stove or just wanting to be sure that your existing machine has been installed for top efficiency, it's important to know how far it should be from the surrounding walls. We've done the research to tell you exactly that. A pellet stove must be installed so that there are 1-3 inches between it and the back wall and 6-7 inches between it and the side walls. The ceiling, and anything hanging from it, must be at least 16 inches away from the pellet stove's top. Your second complaint was that we didn’t get on top of the roof to look at the chimney. We were rushed out of the house upon arrival and couldn’t do an inspection of the inside of the chimney, however, symptoms of a leaky chimney can include the following: Water or condensation inside the firebox. Sound of dripping water in the chimney. Moisture, leaks, or water staining on walls or ceilings around chimney. Musty or dank odors, especially after it rains. Cracked or spalled interior or exterior masonry. A thorough inspection is needed both inside and out to assess which we provide for free. 100% customer satisfaction is our top priority. We are terribly sorry that wasn’t the case here. We are always here to help.Review from Naomi K

On October 21, Michael S****, owner of A Step In Time came to my home to access problems with the chimney after his workers came back in July, 2018 to repair it. He promised me that repairs would be completed FREE of charge if I could wait until January due to being peak season. I agreed. Today, his workers, came back, but was unable to get to the roof because it was still icy from the recent snow. Spoke to S**** who then stated workers can come back next week & will charge only $1500 to repair everything. Should be noted that there are 2 heating systems attached to one chimney. The smaller furnace is for my neighbor who lives downstairs and is working fine. I food S**** that he stated the repairs would be free. He now is denying that he said the repairs would be free and just agreed to come out for another assessment. He also told his workers not to turn the furnace back on until the liner is fixed. They turned it on anyway because we had no heat. Right now, heat is on and should be okay for now. I do not have $1500 & Mr. S**** is now holding up to his word! He has a very nasty attitude & cuts you off when trying to make a point. He needs to be reported for not following through on his word.Review from Brittany K

Very Rude and Unprofessional! I needed an inspection/quote for my chimney. When I go the call to set up a time and date Mike was very rude and short with me. I still went ahead and set up a meeting with him because I heard he did good work. We had an inspection set up for 7-7:30 am. I never received an in-route call. When I called at 7:30 he said he was 25 minutes out. At 8:15 he was still not at my house. I called again, they claimed no one was home and so he went to his next appointment. I was home and awake since 7. He never showed up and they never contacted or apologized for the no-show.
