            The American Inventors Protection Act of 1999, took effect in January, 2000. Under the law, invention promoters must: 1) Disclose in writing the number of positive and negative evaluations of inventions they have given over a five year period, and 2) Disclose their customers' success in receiving net financial profit and license agreements as a direct result of the invention promotion services. Customers harmed by a failure to make the above disclosures or by any false or fruadulent representations by the promoter can sue to recover statory damages of up to $5,000, or actual damages. Damages can be tripled by the court if it finds that the violations are intentional or willful. Consumers can obtain further information through the Office of Independent Inventor Programs, US Patent and Trademark Office, Washington, DC 20231, or by visiting the Office's website at: www.uspto.gov.
