I would like to file a complaint against Magnum Home Services. I feel that they took advantage of me because I am a woman. They started a project in July and told me that it would be completed in 20 days. It is now 8 months later, and the project is not even close to being completed. The work that they have done has been very poor workmanship, and they have charged me for more expensive items and put in cheaper versions. They have also ruined many of my personal belongings by getting paint on them or throwing heavy items on top of them. They have made me four different contracts. The first contract was an insurance company claim for a water restoration renovation project for a total of $16,454.88. In the contract it states that work would commence on 7/1/2022 or within 5 days from the execution of the contract. It also states that the work is expected to be completed within 21 days. There was a second contract for supplemental damages for flooring which totaled $7,483.78. The contract states that work will commence by 7/1/2022 or within 5 business days from the execution of the contract. It also states that the work is expected to be completed within 15 days. The third contract was for additional work outside of the insurance claim to remove two walls and put in a support beam, sand to put recessed lighting in. The total for this contract was $6,500.00. The contract states that work will commence by 7/1/2022 or within 5 business days from the execution of the contract. The contract also states that the work is expected to be complete within 10 days to complete. The fourth contract was remove another wall because when we first discussed the wall removals, I was under the impression it included the whole wall separating the family room and formal living room. This contract was also to shorten a closet. The area of the wall that they removed on this contract was approximately 2 feet. The total for this contract was $4500.00. The contract stated that work will commence by 7/22/2022 or within 5 business days from execution of the contract. It also stated that the work was expected to be completed within 10 days. According to the first three contracts, if they had the extra 5 days to start, and only counted business days, they should have been completed all the work by 8/8/22. According to the fourth contract should have been completed by 8/12/2022. None of the work has been completed fully and the work that has been completed is very poor workmanship. They told me that I had to put 1/3 down upon signing the contracts. I paid by check on all accounts. On 6/28/2022, when the first three contracts were signed I paid $7,651.63. On 7/13/2022, they told me they needed another 1/3 of the money for contract #3, so I wrote another check for $2166.68. On 7/25/2022, I paid 1/3 of the fourth contract in the amount of $1500.00. On 7/26/2022, they said they needed $5,166.66, so I wrote another check. They said they needed it for materials. Then on 8/3/2022 they said they needed $7,979.55 for more materials, so I wrote them another check. I had never hired a contractor before and I trusted they would do good work and complete it as outlined in the contracts. The job for contract #3 was started on 7/7/2022. On 7/13/2022 they came out to work on contract #3 again, which was the extra work out of the scope of the insurance work. They still have not started on the insurance company work which I expressed was the most important. The next time they did some work was on 7/25/2022 on contract #3 and #4. They still had not started the insurance work. Chuck the owner told me they were waiting on the supplemental approval from the insurance company which was just for the flooring in the open area and the family room. Everything else had already been approved by the insurance company. On 8/9/2022, Chuck told me that they would be finishing the sheetrock, then painting and then flooring, as well as bathroom fixtures on 8/11/2022, none of which was done as promised. Nobody showed up. Chuck told me that they did not show up because 2 of the guys were sick and one tested positive for COVID 19 so all of the other guys needed to be tested. When nobody was able to show up to do work because of sick employees and needed COVID-19 testing, another review was posted on 8/25/2022 talking about this company had just completed a roofing project for him in two days. Up to this point workers only came to the house one day a week for 2-3 hours in the morning. On 8/31/2022 Chuck told me that they were going to paint the walls on 9/1/22 and then finish the bathroom. He asked me to pick out flooring so they could put down the flooring. Buildzoom had sent me an email to review the services I was receiving from this company. Chuck sent me a text telling me that my review was unacceptable and requesting that I take down the review. My review stated “they have not completed even half of the job. They only show up one or two days a week for a couple hours. They have drawn up four different contracts for separate work and it appears they are charging me twice for some things and charging me for other work that is not being done. I am very unhappy with this company.” All of which was true. I took down the review as requested but Chuck would not commence with work until after we sat down to talk. I pointed out to Chuck that the drywall had not been finished, his workers had boxed in the main water turn off valve making it difficult to access if I needed, and his workers had completely mudded over one of the outlets in the bedroom. Cliff his foreman had taken it upon himself to move my family room light switches to the other side of the wall. He said “if it was my house that is where I would want them”. I brought to their attention on 8/31/2022, they just changed the switches back on 3/21/23 after bringing it to their attention multiple times. They completed the entire wall in that area like they had no intention of moving the light switches back. They also disconnected one of my light switches which they have not fixed yet. Besides picking out the paint, they have not given me any choices for bathroom fixtures, lighting, bathroom sink or tile options. Cliff just puts in what he wants, and I don’t even know it is installed until after I get home from work. Chuck would not do anymore work until we sat down to discuss my review which we did on 9/3/2022. The last time any work was done on this project was 7/25/2022. On 9/7/2022 he said Cliff, his foreman had surgery and that is why no workers have been to my house to do any more work since our meeting. On 9/8/2022, he said Cliff went back to the hospital and he would need to reschedule my project again. Chuck asked me to remove the few things I had in the open room on 9/14/2022 so the painters could begin painting. The workers had not shown up to do any work, then on 9/19/2022, Chuck texted me he was sat patient first and that is why no workers had been out to the house. On 9/27/2022, I asked Chuck for a time line for the completion of this project since we were way over the estimated completion time. On 9/28/2022, Chucks excuse for not sending any workers to my house was because his daughter was sick and he was at the hospital with her. On 9/29/20022, at 11:18 pm Chuck sent me a message that Cliff and another worker would be out on 9/30/22 to get the paint and frame the closet in the bedroom. I informed Chuck of some poor workmanship at this time. Areas where corners and ceiling lines where they put up the drywall that had not been spackled properly and areas that had not been sanded (many areas), that his painters just painted over them. I informed him at this time that his painters had gotten paints splatters on my TV and my litter robot. The painters had gotten paint on the new recessed lighting that they put in. They had gotten dry wall mud on my fireplace, outlets making them unusable, and my heat registers, all of which have not been addressed to date. Chuck informed me that all of that would be cleaned up, which it has not been done yet. On 10/6/2022, I once again asked Chuck when this project would be completed. He assured me that it would be “wrapped up within 2 weeks maximum”. On 10/24/2022 and no workers still not showing up to my house to complete the project. I let Chuck know that I was hosting Thanksgiving at my house and I needed this project wrapped up. I had all my furniture stored in the garage to make things easier for them, but I needed to start putting my house back together. On 8/24/2022, Chuck told me that Cliff’s son was having difficulty lining up the drain for the shower and that he would have that completed in two days and have the toilet done. He said that they would start running floors while they were getting ready for the punch out phase. On 10/31/2022, Cliff’s son, who is the plumber busted a pipe and flooded the downstairs. They did not use greenboard in the shower, I know a little about dry wall and I let them know they could not use standard drywall in the shower, and they needed to fix that. On 10/16/2022, I inquired why the workers had not been out all week – Thanksgiving was getting closer and I let Chuck know that my elderly mother and handicapped uncle were moving in with me and it is very difficult for them to walk stairs and it was imperative for them to complete the downstairs bedroom and downstairs bathroom. Chuck told me that the reason no workers were out to my house this time is because he had been in court all day and out of commission. On 11/16/2022, he said the flooring had still not come in. He said the floor goes in next, then the trim. However, the drywall was not complete in some areas, and a second coat of paint had not been put on any of the walls or ceiling. On 11/20/2022, I let him know that I wanted the bedroom and bathroom completed before putting in the flooring. I also let him know that there was an outlet that Cliff’s son, who is also the electrician, left in the shower. Chuck told me “the outlet in the shower is going to be a junction box which is going to be covered up by the shower surround”. This did not sound right to leave an outlet in the shower and just cover it up. I sent a text to Chuck on 12/6/2022, that no workers had been out to the house for two weeks. On 12/7/2022 Chuck sent me a text that said “While we would love to finish this job, we agreed not to make any further negative social media posts by you or your family members. All the publicized information is false and there were numerous contracts extending the work. We have been dealing with material issues and other unfortunate circumstances along the way in which I disclosed the immediate medical situations. On November 21, 2022 as I rushed to be by my wife’s side as she had emergency surgery I received a google notification on my phone. Of course it was a negative unactual review by your daughter so as my wife lay blue in a chair as medics worked on her and rushed her for an urgent blood transfusion I chose to halt continuation of your project. I want to stress and emphasize to you that we are installing a free full bath. We ran into several plumbing issues etc. At this point, I have no problem wrapping up the bathroom floors with trim out. I will need you and your daughter to sign an agreement to stop posting defamatory and slanderous statements about us. Once I gather the necessary paperwork and we can meet this coming week to sign and there no further delays. I would like to wrap this up before Xmas so we can move forward peacefully.” One of my coworkers posted a review that his company has not completed the project on my home, and it had been more than 4 months since they started the project. He basically told me if I did not agree that no negative reviews will be made about his company, he would not come back out to complete the project. When I told Chuck that it was not my daughter, he went on to tell me personal information about her. I can only assume that he was doing an internet search about me and my family. As far as his reference to the full bathroom – I asked at the time they were giving me the appraisal if it was possible to put in a standup shower since that was such a small bathroom. They let me know that it would be no problem at all. They never spoke about the cost of the shower, I just assumed that downsizing the sink and vanity would offset the cost for the shower. It was not until we had our first sit down when I pointed out all work he charged me for that was not being done, that he and Cliff implied that those charges were to cover the cost of the shower. I will explain that more in detail later. The next time I heard from Chuck was on 12/20/2022, when he told me he would be dropping off carpet samples. He told me he was going to drop off the flooring on 12/28/2022. I told him not to drop off the flooring until they were ready to lay it. The closet, electrical, drywall, windows and painting still had not been completed up to this point. He wanted to drop off the flooring, doors, bifold and baseboards on 12/29/2022. I was hosting New Years at my house and informed him that I did not want a bunch of materials laying all over my house, since with his history, no workers would show up for weeks after delivering materials to my house. On 12/29/2022 he informed me that they would resume work on 1/2/2022 and work straight through the first week of January to completion. No workers showed up on 1/1/2022. 1/2/2022, 1/3/2022. On 1/4/2022 I received a text they would be there around 1:30. On 1/13/2023, I asked once again when the bathroom and bedroom was going to be completed because they were my priority. He told me the flooring was going to go in on 1/14/2023, and the reason why the flooring had to go in first was because the flooring needed to go down before installing the toilet and vanity. Once again, he was not honest with me. They laid the flooring in the open room and the family room but did not do anything in the bathroom or bedroom once again. Not to mention they have not even finished all the drywall or painting – but Chuck is very insistent that the floors needed to go in first. As of 1/27/2023, they had not even put the window frames in the bedroom, and I heat by oil which is just escaping outside. They have not even put a door up yet so that I could shut the bedroom off. On 1/27/2023 Chuck told me that he was going to need to get my approval for a vanity. However, they never asked me what vanity I wanted and when I came home one day, they had already installed a grey vanity, which is not what I wanted for that room, especially gray. Once again multiple days and weeks without any workers showing up. On 2/23/2023, Chuck sends me a text letting me know the workers would be out on 2/24/2023 to complete the bathroom. I informed Chuck that the plumber broke off the valve to the main water shut off valve in multiple pieces and just left the pieces on the floor. I told Chuck I needed that repaired immediately, heavens forbid a plumbing emergency should happen. Today is 3/26/2022 and it still has not been repaired. Chuck sent me a text that they were tired of waiting for home depot to stock the acrylic shower surround so they decided to put in gray tile in without even speaking with me ahead of time. Once again, I would have never picked a dark gray because it is a very small bathroom. I was told by Chuck that they followed the insurance company breakdown for lightbar kit and mirror and faucet. They also told me that only vanity in stock was the gray one. They told me white was out of stock, but they did not tell me this until after they had installed the grey one. Chuck also told me that the basic shower surround kit is in white so they matched that in ceramic tiles, which it was not because they put in grey tiles and they did a very poor job with the grout. He also told me that I would like it better. I am worried that when they finally moved the outlet to the outside of the wall so that it is not in the shower anymore that they did not patch the hole before putting in the tile, but there is no way that I would be able to tell because they put the shower tile in before I got home. I was told that Cliff would call me in regard to the hole and switch plate, in which he did not call me. We met on 3/16/2023 to go over what was left. I pointed out the poor workmanship for him to correct. This company put in all new drywall in these room and not one edge near the ceilings or corners are smooth. The last time they were out to do some work was on 3/22/2023. In the time frame that he has been unable to complete my job, he has received multiple reviews for other jobs that he has completed. Reviews listed on your site for jobs that he completed instead of completing my job were dated, 7/26/2022, 8/8/2022, 8/25/2022, 9/9/2022, 9/12/2022, 1/18/2023, and 3/16/2023. Now I want to talk about work that he charged that did not need to be done or that he charged me for more expensive items but put in cheaper items. I am just referring to the insurance claim. He charged me once for the flooring in the original contract, but after receiving authorization for the supplemental flooring that was not included in the first estimate, he wrote up a new contract that charged me for all the flooring, instead of deducting what was he had already charged me for. He charged me for drywall wall work, painting, and base molding to include priming and painting it in the family room in contract #1, Even though in contract #3 and #4, he removed those walls, therefore that is work that did not need to be done. He charged me $645.00 for replacing the vanity, and $232.51 for a vanity top, cultured marble single bowl 2”, but that is nowhere near what he put in and when I questioned him, he said he followed the insurance company estimate to a T. He charged me for 4 doors, pre-hung, maple/Birch, SC, 4 panel, but he put in 6 panel hollow doors. He charged me for replacing texture, ceiling splatter/orange peel in all the rooms, but that is something that was not done. He charged me twice for the bedroom closet doors. His workers have gotten paint on the new flooring they put in, the hinges to the new doors, hinges on my already existing built in cabinets, the heating elements, and multiple pieces of furniture. None of the work has been completed yet and we are in the 8th month since starting this project. The drain they put in the shower is at least 1 inch higher than the shower floor causing a major safety issue. They did not remove the existing floor in the open room, they put cement in the holes and laid the laminate flooring over it, leaving a large gap between the family room and the open room, once again causing a big safety issue. I am not sure where to go from here to get this project completed without being overcharged, or needing to pay for poor workmanship. I cannot afford to pay another company to come in and fix there mistakes in which I had paid for. The first upload includes the first contract and the third contract. Contract 1 and contract 2 is the insurance work and contract 3 and 4 is the additional work.

    Catherine,

Thank you so much for providing our company with this incredible review of our concrete services. I am very excited you are so very happy with your new concrete sidewalk project. It was a pleasure meeting both you and your husband. The project turned out beautiful despite the huge tree impeding the neighboring sidewalk. And yes, the heat was unbearable throughout the day but our wonderful crew was determined to make this project a success for you and happy to have beautified your neighborhood! Thank you again for providing us the opportunity to earn your business. Looking forward to assisting you and your family again in the near future. Have a fantastic day. We appreciate you! Team Magnum.
