My husband and I got married at the Bailey island motel in the summer of 2019. That Christmas my in-laws got us a gift certificate for a night away at the Bailey island motel. The hotel wasnt due to open until that following May 2020. Due to covid the hotel did not open and then it was sold. I was a Nurse working in a pandemic and my husband and I did not travel. In early 2022 my husband and I felt that it was finally safe to travel and I reached out to the Bailey island Motel to see if we could use our gift card. The new owner expressed how she wasnt able to honor it because she did not sell the gift card and that the previous owners said there were no outstanding gift cards. She said the only thing she could do was reach out to them. Many months have gone by still with no resolution and the owner will not honor the gift card that was purchased for a one night stay.

      Business response

      08/30/2022

      Good morning.

This is addressed to ***************** who is no longer the owner of establishment.

I am understanding about the plight of the guests who have a gift card for an establishment that is no longer in existence.

Their gift card was purchased from ***************** who a the time sold the business said that there were NO outstanding gift cards in existence but if one were to show up she would honor it by reimbursing us as the new owners..however, that business is closed.  The motel was knocked down ONE YEAR AGO AND DOES NOT EXIST. THERE ARE CONDOMINIUMS IN ITS PLACE,

There is a new entity with a new address and a completely government ID than the two prior businesses the customer is referring to.

The gift certificate is for half the amount we charge for a one night stay at this time.  Additionally we only accept two night reservations.  I told the customer that I would give her one night at no charge and she would need to pay for the second night.

Basically she would be getting a 500 dollar stay for ******, as I would be taking a gift certificate for ****** and applying it to a ****** room at no additional charge.

Had it not been for the pandemic I would not honor anything as I have no obligation as a new entity but because of that I decided to offer that to the customer which is more than necessary..

We are known for our generous its in this small  community and I feel this was a more than generous way to handle this situation.

Should someone wish to speak to me directly I would be happy to communicate .

I was trying to use this gift card before she sold the current building and moved the business to a new location. ************** the current owner of Bailey island Motel did Finally reach out to me with a solution as she mentioned. This resolution came after going back and forth with her for quite a while and also after I reached out to the BBB.

      Thank you!
