I hired Dave's Handyman (Maine's Handyman), David Dicent on Jan 8, 2022 to complete a renovation project left unfinished from BAC Builders. He was to insulate the living room ceiling, replace the plywood steps with stair tread and close out the cold from the open basement stairs, along with the other work left undone. He quoted me $6,000, and he agreed on $1,500/week. He said it would take 2 weeks and he and his crew would be here everyday until it’s done. I repeatedly asked for a contract for the work, but he just kept saying he would get it, but never did. So, I started searching for a template so I could get a contract signed. I paid him $1,500 on Jan 8, 2022 to start the job, then another $300 Cash, then $400 check on Jan 20. Then I designed him new business cards in exchange for $50 toward the contract. Jan 21, 2022, I found out the $400 Tiger Jacks he put in the basement to hold the load bearing wall were NOT legal (per 2015 IRC, Section 4, R407) and the insulation installed in the ceiling was supposed to be R38 min, not R13. I decided to put the work on hold until I could check the rest of his work. I also found the stair stringers were damaged when he removed the plywood, so he hacked it back together with a scrap 2x4 and didn’t put wood under the tread. He yelled at me when I put the job on hold. Jan 22, he entered my home when I wasn’t there to get his tools. I paid him a total of $2,250 for 20 hrs of work that had to be done over again, and he still wanted more. I stopped payment on $800, but the bank missed the other $400. All his work has to be redone and he refused to refund any of the money I paid him. He harassed me via text for more money for a week, until I had to block him.
