This Summer camp is insufficiently run and is out to just make money, it seems. My daughter spent 2 consecutive weeks at the camp. She is very passionate about horses. She said on day 1 and 2 that she wasn't learning much and definitely not anything explicit about safety protocols around horses. She felt sad that her desires were unmet. By the 3rd morning, I asked nicely to speak with the female owner off to the side. She empathized with the lack of curriculum and involvement by the staff, not taking any responsibility for herself, but blaming the middle management for being absent or unmotivated. Things got a little better once I had to explain to them that my daughter wasn't just there for childcare, which was her assumption. She wanted to learn. The owner explicitly said that because her prices are so low and affordable she sees a lot of kids coming through just for cheap Summer childcare. The last day of camp our daughter told my ex-husband in the car home that she had fallen off a horse. No one called us or told us at pick-up. She hurt her thumb and needed X-rays, but nothing was broken or sprained. They gave Georgie some candy when she was feeling the trauma. This was Friday evening, I called them Monday morning and left a message. No one returned my call. I called on Tuesday morning and the female owner picked up. I gently explained how we wished someone would have treated this situation better asking her why no one mentioned anything at pick up and why the messages weren't being returned. Her excuse for all of it was that she was "busy." Her attitude was cold and quick. She said that an incident report had been written. I wasn't looking for money reimbursement. I was looking for ethical connection and empathy and for them to take some responsibility for the fall. Then, on the call, there was silence and all of a sudden I hear her husband on the phone. He says, "hi how can I help you?" 2 seconds later, just as I am getting ready to say something, he replies, "oops, too bad, you were too slow." Then, he hangs up on me. This entire conversation was less than 3 minutes. I never heard from them again. Extremely rude, cold, unprofessional people all around. They run their camp by a bunch of child slaves it seems, young girls/students are the teachers. Earlier in the second week, I had heard from my daughter that she was on the ground brushing a horse and there were 2 horses that started playing or fighting or something and she was in the middle of the 2 horses as they sandwiched together. A help girl had to airlift her out of there. My daughter is only 4 ft tall. Yes, they wear helmets and yet, the safety protocols and observational standards are questionable. I have heard of other stories of kids falling off horses here and getting concussions. I do not recommend this camp at all in any way. The owners are complacent, rude, dishonorable and irresponsible. They are trying to run a cheap business with a nice public front with nice building and grounds. Thanks.
