Letting someone into your home as a caregiver is an act of great trust. For my family, honesty, integrity and communication are key. I wanted to write this review for others who value those attributes, so they can make an informed choice for their own family.My family and I were very excited about HomeSweetHome, as they have local roots in Southwestern Michigan, and we liked the idea of supporting a community-born company that provides such an important service. This weekend, my grandmother and I prepared to welcome **** into my grandmothers home as a caregiver. We had an introductory visit on Friday. We were excited because **** seemed kind and enthusiastic about working with us. We got off to a rough start. My grandmother has to undergo a painful home medical procedure every day. I took time off work so I could show **** around the house while that was being done. I then asked **** to wait for me to introduce her to my grandma until the nurse had left, and my grandma had a few minutes to recover. Instead, while I was outside talking to the nurse, **** burst in on my grandmother while she was still in severe pain. My grandmother did not immediately recognize her (they hadnt met before), was startled, and spoke sharply as almost anyone would do if a stranger came into their room unexpectedly while they were in a vulnerable state. It seemed like an honest, well-intentioned mistake on Saras part and my grandmother graciously and profusely apologized. **** accepted the apology, and repeatedly told us that we were a good fit, and we talked in detail about plans for the coming week.When we parted **** assured me in no uncertain terms that she would be ready to start work at 10 a.m. on Monday.Over the weekend, my grandmother talked about how excited she was to work with ****, and I organized my work week according to Saras commitment to us. On Monday, my grandma woke up early so she would be awake and alert when **** arrived. She waited by the door for more than an hour, so she wouldnt miss the doorbell. After an hour had gone by, I said I would try to figure out what had happened, so I called **** I was shocked when I found out that **** had never planned to show up at all. She told her supervisors that we had dismissed her, when in fact, wed told her she was a Godsend and that we were grateful. In effect, she lied. When Home Sweet Home learned that **** had no intention of fulfilling her commitment to us, they didnt make a meaningful effort to let us know, despite a thorough intake process in which the urgency of our need was communicated. Although they had at least four phone numbers they could have texted or called, they sent an email to one family member an email that went to junk. They have since apologized for this failure to communicate, and I do believe that in the future, they will follow more professional protocol, and confirm that families are aware of important changes to care plans. **** apparently did not think we were a good fit, which is her prerogative. (In retrospect, I agree.) However, she misrepresented her intentions, causing undue stress and sadness for my grandmother. HomeSweetHomes failure to inform us compounded this disappointment and stress. HomeSweetHome, and *** in particular, have been receptive to this feedback, and are currently looking for other caretakers. Ill update this review if I have more positive experiences to report.
