Signed up for debt consolidation to this business that claims they'd settle every account, QUICKLY. A year in and they've settled two accounts while the rest are being charged off, destroying my credit. I reached out to them with this concern, got no response. I did get a "pre-qualified loan offer" in a few days, which was denied, because my credit is destroyed. So where do we go from here? Still no response from these idiots.Business response

Huron Law Group appreciates the opportunity to research this complaint, and apologize for any frustration our client has experienced. Huron's debt resolution program differs greatly from debt consolidation; Huron is not a lender, and sets clients up on a structured savings deposit schedule for the purpose of negotiations on each enrolled debt as funds accumulate. While we are not able to guarantee loan eligibility, we are able to move forward with the original 39 month program in which the client enrolled. As each account is settled in full, that status will be updated to each of the three credit reporting bureaus by the originating creditor and over time their score and financial health will improve as a result of eliminating each debt. At this time, three of the client's nine accounts have been negotiated and of those, two arrangements have been fulfilled. If any questions persist, we encourage our client to contact our *************** Team at any time. In the meantime, we look forward to your continued program success!Customer response

I hired Huron in 2017/2018 to consolidate my debts, negotiate settlements, and help me start fresh. I just learned that three accounts, all through ********** are showing as delinquent, and still active. Huron did not fulfill their end of the bargain. They also encouraged me to cash out my 401(k) to make (1) payment of fees owed Huron, and make payments to creditors. Bottom line, I wound up wit significant tax implications.Business response

The accounts in question are reflected as delinquent on the clients credit report as a result of being place in term settlements which have not yet been fulfilled. For settlement agreements, creditors and collectors only update a consumers credit report ***** days following the final settlement payment is made. Any client who has interest in accelerating their program is encouraged to add funds as they are able; and while no client will ever be forced to do so, they may be provided with examples of how other clients have infused their savings in the past.
All tax implications were outlined in the disclosures in both the client enrollment agreement and the enrollment compliance call at the beginning of the program.Customer response

Huron claimed they could help settle debt and save me money, stated this is a "hardship program". Original amount of debt they're asked to settle is $11,743 after I removed several accounts for lack of action even though I had forwarded settlement offers the creditor sent to me. The 4 accounts that remain were settled at $6,314.02 and the company charges a fee of 25% of the original balance totaling $2,935.75 so this adds up to $9,249.75 owed. On the surface this shows a savings of $2,493.23. Huron has already taken $2404.21 in fees ($605 to the Better Life Plan, which is not optional, $140.80 in another recurring fee, $202.32 for settlement reviews, $1166.09 for retainer fees and a $290 enrollment fee). Assuming no further settlement review fees or retainer fees, and assuming I maintain the $665 monthly payment they are requiring, the debt should be settled in 13 more months ($9249.75-1904.34 already paid to creditors=7345.41. Divided by 665-(55+12.80 in monthly fees)= ***** months) This results in another $881.40 in fees. Take the savings of $2493.23 and subtract $2404.21 in fees already paid and subtract $881.40 in future fees, and it turns out I am paying $792.38 more than if I had just paid the creditor the full amount owed. Despite this loss, the company is insisting the program won't end for 20 months. When questioned, Huron customer service associated become hostile and management (escalation) is promised but never calls back to explain what the fees are for and why the payments would continue for an additional 7 months. The company failed on their promise to save money on the debt and are instead costing almost $800 more. The whole time I've been in the program I've received settlement offers from creditors that are equal to or better than the ones reached. There were also settlement offers sent for accounts that I ended up removing due to lack of attention. Huron is charging insane fees for work they are not doing and failing to deliver on their promises.Business response

We have made multiple attempts to contact the client, left multiple messages, and emailed the client in an attempt to reach her to resolve the complaint. We would like the opportunity to explain her account and our fees. We also believe that since all her accounts are settled and there is no longer a risk of litigation, the client could benefit from cancelling her legal club membership, which would shorten her program. Please contact ** and request a manager at your earliest convenience.Initial Complaint

We have investigated the client file and spoke to the client on several occasions. Our investigation determined the client was billed correctly for the services provided. He is correct that we billed and collected $1,807.48 for the one account we settled for him, which saved him approximately $3,621. We did not charge for any of his other accounts that were not settled and he was cancelled pursuant to his request. The client was 8 months into an estimated 56 month program and was on track with his program when he canceled. The client was advised of, and agreed that he understood, that a debt relief program like ours will likely cause a negative impact on credit.
The fees for legal services are for a third party prepaid legal club product not charged by Huron Law Group that the client authorized to be taken from his account. Those fees were collected by *****************, not Huron. All fees, including the legal club fees and bank fees, were discussed and signed for in the client's enrollment agreements. If client is seeking a refund of legal club fees, he should contact ***************** at ************. If client is seeking a refund of his banking fees, he should contact his escrow company/bank, CFTPay, at **************.
Sincerely,
Huron Law Group

The client received a full breakdown of all fees and charges by email from a client services supervisor on October 18th, which also included a copy of his signed agreement where he agreed to the fees that were charged, and a copy of the settlement obtained for him for which he was charged. If the client would like to verify the numbers, he may contact his third party payment processor, CFTPay, and log into his account to see a ledger of all drafts, charges, fees, and payments to creditors. Our fees are charged only after we obtain a settlement, the client accepts a settlement, and at least first payment on the settlement was completed (in this instance, our fee was charged after the final payment to the creditor). All these conditions were met. The client's acceptance of the offer was done online by the client on April 28th at about 6pm. That acceptance was completed by the client through his unique login and included his IP address in the system logs. From our investigation, our fees were charged properly pursuant to the signed agreement and we fulfilled our obligations concerning the approved settlement.
Sincerely,
Huron Law Group PLLC

To whom it may concern, I was told when I signed up for this company that my credit score would go down in the next 3 To 6 months then they would send bulk payments to both my credit cards and my credit score would go back up. The salesman aka employee also joked about you don't plan on making a big purchase in the next 3 to 6 months. After numerous numerous calls to this company, being hung up on numerous times when I asked to talk to a supervisor due to every employee giving different information. I was not even aware in 7 months they didn't contact one of my credit cards until I received a letter from a collection agency. I called Huron Immediately and emailed them a copy. Approximately a week later I called to see if they had contacted this creditor and was advised they had not and would be around 03-2023 before any contact is made. I expressed my concerns to the false information this company has continued to protray and was told I am so sorry. That is it. My final straw with this company and there misinformation was when I called the collection agency whom advised I will be sued. Called Huron Law Group and was told there wasn't enough money in my account. As of today's date they have taken from me $4,802 also there $59 monthly fee which was told to me was Huron Law Firms fee. This company has only paid 4 payments of $400 to one of my debtors. Leaving $4,402.00 in MY account. I called two weeks ago to cancel this service like I was told I could do when I signed up at no cost to me. I was told they were going to send both creditors paperwork. I would be issued my refund. I called today and spoke with Kaponya an employee of this company and was told I do not get a refund that that was Hurons Fees and I still owed more company fees. I asked what company fees and how much are they. Kaponya advised it doesn't say and they told me I could quit this program at anytime and no charges to me. She said you are right. I am requesting my full refund immediately!Business response

We have investigated the client's complaint and determined that there appears to be several misunderstandings about our services that were most likely caused by a third party referral company upon enrollment. We have reached out to the client to discuss her complaint. The issue is being addressed with the referring entity and the client will receive a substantial refund of fees charged. We have reached an agreement with the client to resolve this complaint.
Sincerely,

I hired this company over 2 years ago, I signed a contract for $372 a month, they told me not to worry about anything, they would handle all of my debts!!!! Too good to be true, not once did they tell me that they were involved with their own financial institution, I had to go to court over a credit card that had never missed a payment until they got ahold of it. I had to keep them informed , I even got a lower payment for settlement. Now, I have been on SS since ****, I have never had to file taxes, not once did they tell me that I would receive a ****, now this year I have received ****s for the previous year. This company has ruined me, and their guarantee of $372 a month for 4 years was all bullshit! I paid them almost 2 full years, and now I am in their financial institution paying $100 more a month for 59 months instead of 48. I was told that my questionnaire would be posted upon leaving, just another lie!!!Business response

We are very sorry you were not satisfied with our services and would like an opportunity to respond and address your concerns. We are not affiliated with the financial institution you took a consolidation loan from and we take no referral fee. You were referred to a consolidation loan company because you expressed interest in the loan and desired to use it to graduate early from Huron's debt relief program. The loan was entirely optional. However, because you sought and obtained the loan, Huron was able to utilize the loan proceeds to settle your accounts, resolve a lawsuit on favorable terms, reduce your overall debt, and graduate you from our program. We have no control over the terms of the loan you sought and received, including payment terms.
As we disclose in both our retainer agreement and verbally upon enrollment, the settlement of debt may lead to taxable income. You may be able to avoid some or all of the tax from your **** by filing Form 982 showing insolvency--please contact a tax professional for more information. We are sorry that this came as a surprise.
Although we disagree that we mislead or lied to you, we understand that you are frustrated, and we would like to work with you to resolve your complaint. When our manager spoke to you, it appeared you were not interested in working with us to resolve your complaint. If that changes, please contact our client services manager, **************, at ************.
Sincerely,
Huron Law Group PLLC
