    I purchased an E-book from West Academic for my course. I cannot use their e-reader app on any device but my laptop computer making the e-book not especially portable, or easy to use. Immediately after purchasing the book contacted West via email because the e-reader they use did not work without being connected to the internet and further was not compatible with any device but my laptop and my windows supported tablet. I received no response. I have since discovered that the e-reader feature that allows electronic highlighting and note-taking do not work on my tablet. I emailed the e-reader's tech support and followed the instructions, and these features only work on my laptop. This is not what **** promises in their e-book. This is a total bait and switch and I would have just ordered the print book in the first place had I known this was going to be a problem. I have attempted to contact **** via phone (was instructed to leave a message and never received a call back on 1/20/23). The only way to return an e-book is by phone. My semester has already started so I need to be able to read the e-book (which I cannot take notes or highlight) until a print copy comes in. I have now (1/21/23) ordered the print-on-demand version which will take 2-3 weeks to arrive. I emailed West to see if they can offer me an expedited copy given the circumstances but because I have not heard back from my first email a week ago I am not expecting any resolution of the problems I am experiencing.

    A quote from my experience: "Aren't you a law student? Don't you want to become a lawyer? Shouldn't you read the fine print?" - West Academic **************** Manager Ordered a book online with an online access code. Dropped the class and did NOT use the code. Was unaware of the return policy, so I emailed customer service seeking a refund. Was told I was not eligible for a refund because the book was taken out of the shrink wrap. I protested and asked to speak to a customer service manager. After hearing my complaint the manager said, "Aren't you a law student? Don't you want to become a lawyer? Shouldn't you read the fine print?" I told him that I was a consumer like everyone else and that I didn't interact with the return policy until I needed to return the book. ***West Academic puts the return policy at the bottom of its webpage. A customer can purchase a product without viewing that part of the website.The manager reiterated the "lack of shrink wrap" policy. So, I offered to have the book reshrink wrapped since that seemed to be the issue. The manager then said that the "lack of shrink wrap was not the issue. But, due to the lack of shrink wrap the code (their intellectual property) was considered compromised."I asked if they had a way of reviewing to see if the code for my book had been used. He said, "No, West Academic does not have a way to check to see if any code ***their cherished intellectual property*** had been used." He then explained that the system automatically registers a code once it is used, so that code cannot be used again. I asked if the IT department was able to review the use of their codes. He said, "No." Evidently, there is no way for West Academic to double-check whether their intellectual property is still viable, they just bank on the system registering it when it is used.However, if you need help with books on your bookshelf, West Academic can see what books are on there...Had to sell to Valore.com; almost got 50% back.
