I hired JG Stone and Masonry on September 3 to complete a backyard patio project. The owner said he would take a large amount of my brick in exchange for a cut in price, which I agreed and was grateful because I wanted to change the patio half brick/half pebble at a rate I could afford. The work was to start on September 20 and was told it would take 2-3 weeks max. It was delayed a week because of reported illness of his crew, so the work started September 27. He offered to throw in a fire pit at no cost, and instead we agreed to extend part of my patio, using my bricks. It is now December 15 and it is still not finished. The owner is now not responding to my texts, even though it shows he has read them. He stopped responding when I started complaining 1) how long it was taking 2) that he took too much brick to finish the job and 3) I realized he was doing some shady business practices. I have given leeway for crew illness, funeral & weather and 12 weeks is still an unreasonable amount of time to finish. In September I gave the owner and another company a deposit of $3,000 for the $5,000 job, the balance due when finished. The owner asked me to cut him 2 different checks for a total of $3,500, not to his to his company, but written out to other people - his explanation was that way it didn't have to go through his office. I did this to be nice and wanted him to finish asap and now realize this was a mistake and shady. He has also taken away too much brick, so a part of my project won't be completed with my original brick as intended. His crew doesn't know where the brick went and the amount needed to finish the project has not been returned. The crew also said the owner has at least 4-5 projects going with only 4 crew members and none of them are finished. The owner has also been out of town for 1.5 months. Last Thursday 12/2 I told him I would reach out to the BBB if the patio wasn't finished by today 12/15. Since then there has been no crew, no response.
