Home renovation started 11/2022 and ended 3/2023. Kitchen, master bath and guest bath were gutted and redone. On the tail end of the renovation when they could not finish our master shower correctly we were told bu the owner of this business that him and gis guys are not licensed contractors but they would try to fix the issues as best they could. We did not allow any further entry to our home after this. This project was right at 50k. We have no knowledge of where any materials came from, exact cost and no warranty.. owner ******************* said numerous times if anything happens just call him. We would have never hired such a company if they were honest about their professional knowledge. No permits were pulled and we are subject to fines and a low scale of takedown of some of the work for a city inspection. Owner of this company refused to refund us the money saying that he spent it already. I have reported this business and the owner to the state and current seeking legal help with my our lawsuit.Business response

The entire renovation was $50k and included the kitchen, full bath and master bath.
Work was completed for all 3 rooms the week of January 16, 2023. All items and supplies were approved by homeowner or, purchased by homeowner.
I requested a final punch list for any outstanding items and received a verbal list the week of January 23. All items completed, in the shower we removed the portion of tile on the floor where the puddling was happening. Work was completed to resolve issue.
After this last punch list, I followed up with both homeowners and asked several times if anything else needed addressing. I received a text February 27 stating a pipe burst under the kitchen sink, we went to the home within an hour and fixed the pipe.
March 14, the homeowner requested another walk-thru. I went to the home on Monday March 20 for final walk-thru. I took photos of items that they wanted addressed and scheduled work to be completed on March 28. On March ********************************************************************** to do the work on the final punch list.
I have before and after photos and videos of the each room that was renovated and would be more than happy to show the work we did. At no point during the initial meeting or during the five months of work did they ever inquire about licensing. At no point did I ever state I was licensed. If having a licensed general contractor was integral to their decision process the homeowners could have asked during the initial consultation or before the work began. The homeowners received my contact information through a referral.Thank you for your time- *******************

I am rejecting this response because:My husband asked if they were licensed to do the actual work and ******************* responded with "no but I am insured, and we will do our best to get it right. I do have via text message me asking ******************* for his business information and license information, but he chose to not respond to that message. I do have me explaining to ******************* via text that we would have never hired him had he not passed himself off as a licensed contractor. The work that was done was over the legal amount for an unlicensed contractor and when we brought up our concern via text he chose once again to not respond to us. Proper paperwork was not filled with the city and the work has not been inspected as ******************* should have had done prior to and after the work was done. We now have holes in the wall where things have come undone, cabinets are chipping in multiple places and the shower still does not drain and is collecting mold from standing water. We do not have any receipts or warranty on anything that was put into the home renovation because we were not provided it. As I have stated prior, we have also had the plumbing redone because a professional informed us that we were having leaks and sewer smells coming from our kitchen plumbing because it was done incorrectly. We have been advised by an attorney to report this ordeal to the attorney general before sinking any more funds into this ordeal. We as the customer should not be liable for any damages/fees. I can and will provide the text chain expressing our concerns about the unprofessional work and those concerns being ignored at every turn. We simply want funds refunded so we can get inspection and all work fixed professionally.

As stated in my first reply, the homeowners waited until all work was finished before asking if I was a licensed contractor. I do not hide that I am not licensed nor do I falsely claim to be licensed. 12 years as a commercial construction superintendent and 4 years working renovation projects, no complaints by anyone before these clients. My reputation precedes me and the majority of my side business comes from referrals. My business is built on transparency, communication, and honesty. When working with these particular clients, one room was renovated at a time and I could not begin another room without the clients approval first. If they were unhappy why did they approve each room and allow me to continue? Missing receipts- homeowners purchased 90% of materials and supplies. Cabinet quality- KCD cabinets, these are in my own home and I have installed in others with no issue. Plumbing leaking? We did not move plumbing, we used existing drains when installing new faucets. Shower in master bath not draining- we tried to resolve once and were scheduled to come back to and redo tile to fix, this is when they asked if I was licensed and where all unraveled. My before and after photos will speak for themselves. The months of text messages will prove my intent to resolve every issue and show the homeowner prevented the problem from being resolved, not myself.
