Emerald Hollow is amazing!!! We enjoyed digging for gems and looking for special stones in the creek. Honestly it was a great day!!! We were tired and dirty but had so much fun!!! The area is clean, the staff is so nice and helpful, there are picnic tables, and the cleanest bathrooms!!!! I couldn’t believe how well kept everything was!!! Daniel C****** is the nicest, kindest, and most helpful young man! I can’t wait to go back!!!! To address the person’s complaint about the thunderstorm. The Emerald Hollow web site repeatedly says please call to check if they are open if there is supposed to be bad weather. It also has a VERY clear notice that they will close temporarily for thunderstorms and lightening.

Emerald Hollow Mine in Hiddenite NC is a great place of natural beauty! If you are a rockhound there is no better place to be! You can dig in the mine area and follow veins to find quartz, amethyst, emerald, hiddenite and other specimens. The mine is a wooded hillside so you enjoy the peace of the woods while digging. It is work and you may not find much unless you work at it as it is a real dig site. But you can also go down the hillside to the creek! Full of large rocks and rushing water and also under a canopy of trees digging in the creek is the best! Again you can find the above listed rocks as well as topaz Smokey quartz and others. You do have to dig but it’s a wonderful place to be on a hot day. The third thing is the sluiceway. You can buy a bucket to sieve or sieve your mine dig finds. Bought buckets can be native or seeded or a combo of both. Buckets to fit all levels! With beautiful specimens! I like to spend 2-3 days doing all three things. The people are helpful and knowledgeable with a lapidary on site. Please visit the website as the comments at the bottom of the pages and the pages thoroughly explain the experience you will have. I’d like to address the negative review about the thunder storm. This is an outside natural area. Weather comes up and like any other outdoor experience you have to be prepared to wait out a storm to continue your activities.

Took my 5 grandchildren (ages 8-16) in July. We had a wonderful time! The staff was very good with the kids. As they found a “pretty rock” they would take it to the staff at the sluice to ask what it was. No mater how many time they asked, the staff always had a polite answer! Very family oriented! If your in the area this place is a must. Prepare to spend the whole day, it’s a blast!
