A company named 24/7 **************** installed a 30 amp transfer switch in my home in 2017 to send power from my large portable generator to my home. All was fine. 24/7 sold out to Electech and in 2019, I inquired as to whether I should have had a 50 amp transfer switch installed since my generator did have that capability. *****, the owner of the company informed me that I would have more power and I requested Electech convert my 30 amp to a 50 amp. I have never used this service since it was installed after the last hurricane. On 17 March 2023, another electrician arrived at my house to convert my propane water heater to a standard electric water heater. This electrician informed me that this 50 amp service was not safe and that I had 240 volts being sent from my house to the transfer switch and the plug on my generator was referred to as a "suicide plug". I should be able to leave my generator outside of my house, plugged in, and in the event of power loss, manually turn off the main breaker to the house and then start generator for power; however, if I plugged my generator in while power is on from pole, I would be electrocuted and generator destroyed. Contacted Electech immediately who sent their "Senior Electrician" who agreed installation was unsafe, and sent pictures to *****. I've gave Electech 7 days to contact me with a resolution to this problem but no action was initiated. Contacted Onslow County Inspections, spoke with Deputy Director who informs me that no permits have ever been issued for this address and advised me to file a complaint with the ** Board Examiners of Electrical Contractors, which I have done and am awaiting the results of their investigation. Have contacted another electrician I know to be reliable, advises he can correct entire situation for a cost of $1000.00. Request Electech pay $1000.00 to correct the installation. The initial charge was much more than this.

      Business response

Electech was asked by ****************** to give him an estimate on installing a generator transfer switch. He had recently purchased a new generator and wanted to be able to utilize its higher output capacity. Electech gave ****************** an estimate for removing his old panel, installing a new ATS with intergraded generator receptacle. The cost was higher than ****************** wanted spend. We offered him a lower cost option using a separate panel, generator receptacle and whip. ****************** chose the lower priced option. We installed the equipment and explained how to connect the whip, select the correct breakers and how to operate the equipment safely. He was happy with the installation at the time and that we gave him an option that worked at a lower cost. It has been two plus years and multiple power outages since we installed Mr. ******** equipment and we are sure that he has operated it safely and has never called ** with a problem. ****************** had another electrician inform him that in his opinion the work that Electech had done was not safe. ****************** called our office and we sent one of our technicians out to look at the installation, take pictures and make sure the work we had done had not been tampered with. At no time did our tech agree that the installation was unsafe. Our tech informed ****************** that our office would be in touch with him about the matter. Our office at anytime has a backlog of around two to three weeks and unfortunately we didn't contact ****************** in his timeframe so he escalated the matter. Electech has reimbursed ****************** for work done by his electrician.

I am rejecting this response because: While it is true that I have been reimbursed for expenses to correct this problem, all other information provided by this company are incorrect.  I refer to my original complaint.  The requested work was to upgrade a 30 amp transfer switch that this same company (different owner) installed to a 50 amp transfer switch. Work was completed in 2019 and there have been no power outages since at my residence that required backup generator power. Furthermore, the representative Elec Tech sent to my residence to inspect the work clearly stated that he did not like the installation, that I should have a generator cable and interlocks installed, and unfortunately, the two employees that did the work were no longer employed by Elec Tech.  This conversation was witnessed by myself, my wife, my new electrician, and my plumber.  While I am currently satisfied with the fact that I have been reimbursed for expenses to correct this problem, I am disturbed by the fact that I had to escalate this issue and was totally ignored once the problem was identified, knowing that serious injury could have occurred.  I thank The Better Business Bureau for your attention in this matter and again, I am satisfied with the end result of being reimbursed for expenses; however, I reject all other comments contained in Elec Tech's response.

      Sincerely,

      *************************
