I own a group therapy practice and was looking into applying for a grant to help my mission of providing more mental health services in schools. I have never written a grant and needed support. I put my trust in Sunflower Grant Writers and was met with a quick response from the owner, Katie, which was appreciated and helped build my trust with this company. Katie and I briefly communicated by phone and got things set up with one of her staff grant writers. Katie was persistent in email that I pay the invoice immediately. Katie made me sign a contract and required me to pay up front $600 for 4 hours of time at $150 per hour in order to get started with this grant. I was invested in attempting to get this grant going with Sunflower Grant Writers support and so I paid the full $600. I met with her grant writer Tamara over Zoom for an hour which lead me to think that I may not have enough time nor necessary documents to get this grant completed efficiently. After the Zoom call Tamara followed up with a few emails that had questions for me and more information about the grant. I took a few days to ponder if this grant was a right fit for my mission after receiving the brief information from Tamara. I came to the conclusion that following through with applying for this grant would not be appropriate based on the sustainability aspect and limited time I had. After emailing Katie and Tamara that I no longer wanted to pursue the grant. I didn't hear anything back. I expected to have some reimbursement of the $600 as 4 hours were not spent in the limited verbal interactions I had with Tamara. I definitely feel taken advantage of for instilling my trust in this company. I've asked for a breakdown of how the hours were calculated and haven't heard back. I don't want anyone to have the same experience I had and so I would caution anyone looking to use this company for their grant writing service.
