01/13/23 commercial auto insurance policy was purchased and paid in full for $3,942 (1/13/23-1/13/24). The vehicle was registered properly in accordance to NYDMV. In July of 2023 I was told the policy would cancel as the car was being used out of accordance to the policy. The agent told me I cannot drive the vehicle, and because I had driven it there was an extra premium ($3,184) endorsed. This large sum was not made known to me before this. The agent said they would contact me back for a resolution to this matter, but I never received the call. I did not want to pay for insurance that doesn’t allow me to drive the car as in NY you need insurance to drive any vehicle. It would not make sense for me to pay for insurance and still not be able to drive. In accordance to my insurance policy that was stated to me by the agent, I stopped driving and conducting any business in the vehicle. I also had Covid and was recovering from an accident so I could not use the vehicle at all such that there could be any increased risk. 8/05/23 the policy was cancelled due to nonpayment. I suspect this is a predatory practice such that I cannot ask for a refund since the insurance plan is on a ‘no paid’ status after they increased my premium. My injury and non working status are known to the company and they are preying on the fact I have not worked due to Covid and my accident (which is known to them) and cannot afford the insurance rates! 12/5/23 the vehicle was towed by NYPD after receiving numerous parking violations as I was told by the insurance company agent that I could not drive the vehicle. 12/27/23 I called the insurance company and they will not issue a refund on the time paid for on policy (8/5/23-1/13/24) that was unfairly cancelled. They also said I could have driven the car throughout the policy, thus avoiding tickets. They cannot tell me what changed in risk assessment from 1/13/23 to 8/5/23. I now owe $3,000+ to the city of New York because of misinformation.Business response
