Retro Fitness in Hoboken ** was closed around August 1, 2023 with no notice. I was out of town for a few weeks when they closed. I went to the gym to workout upon my return and it was closed for good. The company continued to charge me $37.31 for 5 months ($186.55). I disputed the charges with my bank but the bank says if the company doesn't agree, they will debit my account again for those charges. I finally had my bank put a stop payment on the account (that cost me about $33). The phone number I had was the billing company who tried to contact Retro in order to make sure the charges were cancelled but had no response. The attorney general's office told me they cannot charge when there is no option to use the club nor anyone there to cancel the membership. I want my money back and no further billing to my account. I already joined the new gym at that location in Hoboken, Fitness Factory.Business response

this member has absolutely nothing to do with Retro Fitness of ***************. He was a member in the Hoboken location . This is an issue that he would have to resolve with Retro Fitness of Hoboken. We do not own or have any affiliation with the Hoboken club. Please advise him to contact ***************************** and explain his situation.
Please confirm to me in writing that this complaint has been removed from anything having to do with the *************** location.
Thank you,

Hi ******,
We would love to work with you but we provided notice multiple ways that the Hoboken gym members were being transferred to the *********** location. Also, per your agreement they were able to transfer membership to another locally owned gym. We are sorry you have had issues with this but it is a full 6 months later since the gym has closed. If you tried to cancel in a more timely fashion it would have cancelled without a problem. Thank you for your understanding.

The gym closed with less than 24 hours noticed and automatically transferred all memberships to another location. I was then charged for my monthly membership fee after the gym had closed. The gym requires you to go in person and cancel with a handwritten reason as to why you're cancelling your membership. Many of ** in the hoboken area do not have cars which makes it extra difficult to venture to the *********** location to cancel the membership. I'd expect the gym management to continue to have more roadblocks to avoid having one's membership be cancelled.Business response

We are no longer in business however, as part of the member's contract we do have the ability to transfer memberships to another gym. The gym that this member was transferred to is 5 miles away but also gives the member the ability to work out at all other Retro Fitness locations. As far as cancellation goes the member still needs to adhere to the cancellation process in the member's agreement.Initial Complaint

I was a member at Retro Fitness Hoboken, and cancelled in-person at the front desk in October 2021. I got a confirmation my membership was cancelled. However, the gym charged my bank account monthly dues for November 2021. I called and was told I need to speak to a manager to resolve. I have been calling every day since, she is never there to help me. I got charged again in December. My account is still active, I am still being charged and there is nothing I can do about it. They offer a better membership rate if you give your bank account information, and then they don't allow you to cancel, and you can't dispute the charges.Business response

We would be happy to credit and cancel this member's account if he can show proof that his account was in fact cacnelled. The agreement calls out that each member should send a certified letter return receipt requested so that there is documentation that the account was cancelled. Please provide this documentation and we would be happy to work with this member to provide a credit and cancel his account. Thank you.
