On November 16 2023, I took my 5 year old *******, to the Williamsburg location of Small Door to be seen due to a *ick bite, and suspected Lyme disease. We saw ****************************** who did an overall exam and reviewed symptoms: fully engorged tick on ****'s nose and sensitivity to touch, yelping with a normal stroke. Dr. * performed heartworm and tick-borne disease testing. Later, Dr. * informed me that ***** test came back positive for Lyme. She recommended doing a subsequent blood and urine test to confirm an active Lyme infection. I questioned this - does it make more sense to move forward with antibiotics? Dr. * advised that she would not recommend that for a few reasons: 1) his symptoms could or could not be related to the Lyme 2) *he positive test could just be indicating antibodies from a past infection and 3) that the course of antibiotics is long. *he blood test would be an additional $280 and urine test would be $84. *his was in addition to the $601 spent on the original appointment. It very much felt like Dr. * was working on commission, upselling additional tests. It is even noted on the Small Door website that recommended treatment for Lyme positive dogs is to prescribe a 4-6 week course of antibiotics. I sought another opinion. *his vet recommended that we start antibiotics for **** immediately. *he vet confirmed that the subsequent blood test performed at Small door did not check antibody levels or for active Lyme infection. Contrary to the email from Smalldoor that **** does not have an active Lyme infection, the second vet concluded, through a Lyme C6 *est, that he did have an active Lyme infection. Lyme is serious and has lifelong complications if untreated I have emailed with the business several times. *hey stand by their false claim that the test was required, and that **** did not need antibiotics, even though their diagnosis has been proven false. I have requested a refund for the additional test, and was denied. Receipts/Emails Available.
