Dion Mather was hired in July of 2021, contracted to renovate 2 bathrooms. The first bathroom was completed mediocre, the master bathroom is a complete disaster. I have picture evidence of everything Mather Construction did incorrectly. When the bathroom was ‘finished’ in September, the final payment of $7,800 was due. However, I went to take a shower, and realized the water was not contained to just the shower area, it would flow throughout the whole bathroom. It was discovered that the walk-in shower was not graded properly. My husband reached out to Dion to resolve the issue, which at first he agreed to. Within those next few weeks, more issues were uncovered and Dion slowly went silent. After 6 weeks, he walked. Left the job, said he couldn’t fix it and was not paid his final payment of $7,800. We have since hired a new company to fix the bathroom, which required a total tear out of the shower area. It was discovered that not only was the shower not graded properly, but was not correctly waterproofed. Nothing about the shower was done correctly. The current contractor took pictures every step of the way, to document all that was wrong. Not only was the shower wrong, the toilet was not installed correctly, which has lead to a leak in the kitchen ceiling. This new construction, including labor and materials, is costing us $17,000. I would like Dion Mathers to cover the difference it is costing us to fix his mistakes. $1700 minus his final payment ($7,800) that we have put towards the new company is $9,200. I wish we had not hired Mather Construction and would highly advise against anyone else hiring them as well.

One of my employees did not grade the shower floor properly and I took complete responsibility for it.  I agreed to correct the shower area that was installed incorrectly by purchasing the tiles to do it over for the wall and the floor.  ********* *********** proceeded to add a ton of other work that was not in the original estimate and wanted me to come out of pocket for all of the "extras" such as cutting open the sub floor, removing the drain, adding another drain and adding a **** board pan on floor and wall. We did raise the floor, but the back of the house was settled so badly that it wasn't enough with the double board. I apologized to them and offered to fix the original contract mistake, but they wanted me to agree to add all the extras without any form of payment.  I tried to meet them halfway and asked for half.  His response was, "I'm not paying you a penny until the work is done".  I was never silent. I kept on texting and emailing the entire time. I sent him an invoice for the final payment, which was not $7,800, it was $9,320 because I had already done extra things that were unforeseen damages (which was originally in the contract that was signed by *********) I sent the invoice and her husband complained about the unforeseen work which she had agreed to.  I communicated with her every step of the way before I did anything, but she didn't communicate with her husband. I delivered the tile and the **** board to their house. The only complaint about the toilet that her husband told me about was that it was leaning or wasn't level and I told him that I would fix it.  He never said anything about water leaking. After he didn't agree to pay, I told him that I wasn't willing to do any more extra work on top of the original contract that they already owed me.  However, I was willing to fix the original mistake and wanted to work with them.  I also would've fixed all the extras with some form of payment.  I am not an unreasonable man, and she should know that. But I do have a family of 6 to feed as well. There was about $800 worth of extra work that I did not charge them for, and I explained that to him in an email I sent to him. I've never had a complaint before, and I have never had somebody not wanting to meet me halfway. I feel bad that the situation ended like that and wanted to help, but I felt like they were going to let me do all the extra work and then not agree to pay me for it because he was denying the extra work already and mentioning things in an email that had nothing to do with my job (like the garage door). I told ********* to order the tile locally, but she ordered from *******, so when we tried to find it, everything was out of stock. and it's still out of stock. So that's why the job to longer than needed to fix. I'm not going to disrespect this family, but I felt like the best thing to do was to leave. I didn't feel comfortable funding the whole project (which was about $2,500), besides what was damaged which I think is fair. I lost $14,000 on this job between the balance owed, the materials to fix the problem and what I had to pay a plumber to install items in bathroom. If you know anything about Mather Construction Pro, you'll know that *********'s description of us in not accurate.  I know she is angry rightfully so, but I was willing to work with her and her husband. I just needed them to meet me halfway.

      Customer response

      12/06/2021

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below. Dion... I warned you about your employee and his incompetence. I specifically asked you take take charge of the master bath project. I told you I did not want him doing any of the work. And yet, you let him do the work and were hardly on site. 'Extra Work'.... cutting sub floor would have been a necessity to do the job correctly. That's not extra work, that's doing it the right way. Which you failed to do the first time around. WE bought all of these 'extra supplies'...the **** board and tile. We paid you $18 thousand dollars, to do a mediocre job on the kids bathroom and ours. We certainly were not going to pay you an extra cent until our master bath was FUNCTIONAL. We didn't know about the leak in the kitchen until after you had ghosted us. You built the floor up so high, and failed to put an extender piece of wax, the toilet leaked every time we flushed it. And again, you weren't here for that, you let your crew do it. You ruined our driveway, 2 sets of tires, and our door from the garage entering the house. Which we never were going to mention until you got fiesty! You also NEVER told me to buy local until after ******* was out of stock on their tile. In fact, you specifically told me in the beginning that you love ******* and use them all the time. It was only after they were out of stock did you preach that you supposedly told me to buy local...which you never did. That plumber cost was your responsibility, not mine. When I hire a contractor, I assume they know plumbing. Which Mathers Construction does not. Your cost, not mine. In conclusion, I regret the day ever having met you. Know in your soul that I tell any and everyone how bad your company is. You clearly took on a job that was far over your head, its clear as day. And the reason for my outrage and voice, is so that no other poor family gets duped by your company.

I was on site the majority of the time (thank God for technology-it can show you where I was at any time). The only time I was not there was the weekend I was out of town with my wife, and I asked you if you wanted them to work and YOU said yes. I've never had an issue with my employee up until this incident, and I took complete responsibility for it, trying to accommodate you (which was impossible).
Cutting the subfloor would have been done, however, it was not in the original quote to move a drain and add another one. I have receipts for my tile I bought for the wall from the tile shop and the tiles for the shower which I ordered but were not the right ones, so I took them back.  We were all looking for the tile and you guys found them first.  I sent you an invoice for $9,020 which we agreed that cost of the tiles you found would be taken out of it.
I never ghosted you, I have proof of all texts and emails. The last conversation I had with ****, he said he was going to call me back, but he never did! As far as the toilet, he told me it was not level, so I said I would fix it. We flushed it over and over and it did not leak, and we installed the double ring to make sure it was high enough.
We did not ruin your driveway.  You signed a contract to have a dumpster in your driveway, and for all I know, it could have been all your truck deliveries (vanities, tiles, etc.) that you are responsible for.
I offered to pay for your tires several times, and you told me * took care of it. Not my problem. Now you want to bring it up because you're angry. I offered. The door was dinged up and not working properly. I know this because you told me and even asked me to shut the garage door every time we left because of it which I have text records of. But again, you say that's my fault because you're angry.
I have never used *******; I always encourage my customers to buy local. I do not and have never purchased interior cosmetics for customers which is on the estimate-it clearly states, “customer responsible”. I have record that I've never purchased a thing from *******!
I brought my plumber in (and you met him) and you are still saying it's my responsibility for unforeseen damages. The cost of the plumbing was not mine because it falls under UNFORSEEN DAMAGES. No one knew about the pipe behind the vanity. Because of the pipe, we either had to cut open the floor, or cut up the vanity and you chose to cut open the floor.  Again, unforeseen.  Estimates are given on what is visible! You can't add a lot of stuff and expect us to do it for free.
I've never gone in business to hurt anyone or with bad intention. Mistakes happen and you try to resolve them maturely as adults, which I tried. We both have families and I have 6 people that I need to feed, so I was not coming out of pocket anymore. I'm sure whatever you have done, is not costing what you are claiming.
I'm glad for the day I met you. You've shown your true colors instead of compromising to try to resolve the issue. I went above and beyond purchasing out of pocket materials so that you wouldn’t have to leave with your children, expecting to be reimbursed. You can tell whoever you want, but anyone that knows me will know this is not how I do business. And if you are so displeased, why is your bathroom posted with 5 starts on ******* website?
Thank you. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Updated response: I am not willing to refund the The customer because there was still a balance of stuff that I didn’t get paid for ($9,020). They could’ve taken the labor cost out of that. A 40 x 109 space to be repaired does not cost $9,020. I was only responsible for the small space. I bought the tiles for the wall (18 tiles) and I agreed to pay for the tiles that they found. They still owe me about $5500 if I credited them for the mistake. Im attaching a picture of the original estimate where she asked me to take some items out in order to save money. So we did. At the end she asked us to put it back in which I had to charge her for because I had already deducted that. I will send you a picture of the estimate that she wrote on asking us to remove it. We ended up doing it and then she didn’t want to pay me for it.
