I took my car to Baldwins 6/28/22 for an inspection and it passed, no one checked the brakes or anything else as I stood there and watched the man plug in the car to the computer then give me a new sticker. Two days later I lost the brakes on the car. I brought it in to Baldwins and it was a bad brake line, it took 3 days to fix it. Paid $273 cash, he gives a discount for cash but no receipt. When I picked it up it smelled like gas but I figured it was brake fluid just burning off. The next day my check engine light was on. I brought it to Advanced auto parts to have it scanned to see what the issue was. It was an evap or "gas" leak. Since the car was laid up for 3 days by Baldwin I decided to bring it to another shop. The shop called me and questioned if someone was working underneath it recently. I told them yes for a brake line. He then said, now that makes sense, because the hole is near the top of the tank NOT the bottom. If someone wanted to steal gas it would be at the bottom, so I had to pay $1,257.14 to have it repaired when it was Baldwins fault and they didn't want to take responsibility for it when I called them and spoke to **** the manager.

      Business response

      08/25/2022

On 6/28/22, **** brought her vehicle here for a NYSI. (see attached) The inspection was performed.

On 7/12/22 (2 weeks later), **** returned with the vehicle stating a brake concern. The diagnosis was a rotted brake line. (At time of NYSI, no brake leak was detected) We replaced the brake line and bled the system. (see attached)

**** did contact me on 7/21/22 and stated "just to give you a heads up, I am at another shop and they said a hole was drilled in the fuel tank." My reply was "the brake repair we performed did not require a drill."

**** has been a longtime customer, as such I wish she would have given me the opportunity to remedy her concern. If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to me at ************.

      Thank you,

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# ********, and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

Interesting how now there is a receipt for the repair that was paid in cash for and I was told no receipt for cash. They made up the mileage as the car was not able to be driven, it had no brakes, the pedal went to the floor,  and I couldnt go to work a day after the alleged inspection until it was fixed. They never checked the wheels, brakes or any lights as I stood there and watched them the whole time. As far as I am concerned the inspection was never done correctly and they put a hole in the top my tank while fixing the brakes to make more money off of me. The car smelled of gas when the car was driven home from their shop, i thought it was brake fluid. The attitude I got from **** the manager made me go to another shop.
