Security Mutual is taking its time to approve a claim to clean up my living room after my late husband's death. He died on the couch and was not found for two weeks. Needless to say, the couch is ruined and the odor is unbearable. I need to move into the house ASAP because the lease to my apartment is up. As my husband and I were going through a divorce at the time of his death, I was not living in the home and I had to prove I was the rightful owner of the estate (including the home) before anyone would talk with me. I am imploring Security Mutual to PLEASE approve the claim so I won't be essentially homeless. So far, I have heard nothing. I have 10 days to vacate the apartment with all of my belongings.

This claim is currently in the settlement phase of the process.  We have authorized payment for the cleaning. The delay was caused by a few items: 

1. The name on the property deed was in question, and we needed a copy of the paperwork indicating that ******* was the executor of ******'s estate. Those items have now been provided by *******. 

2. Coverage for this type of loss is not covered on the policy. Due to the sensitive issue of the loss we have choosen to cover the cleanup costs quoted at $4,689.35.

Several Complaints, but none recorded- so now a review. Does Security Mutual have pull here or what? To get coverage with Security Mutual, we had to add a back deck (on a room no one uses, and is all storage) and put up railings on an entrance that isn't ever used. All we ask for is coverage that we pay a premium for. We pay to be protected, having to contend with black mold as a result of Security Mutual cutting corners has now become a health hazard. AND what's worse is there is nothing we can do but to close the room off. We had a water leak from the bathroom off the upstairs kitchen that flowed past the floor through the ceiling below, and flooding the floor below. The water damage was everything below the leak, to include a subfloor replacement. The subfloor was installed an 1/8" shorter. The ceiling was replaced and plastered. The only thing they didn't do- actually refused to do was to inspect the floor- including the space below the floor and above the ceiling. It all looked beautiful- accept the constant tripping of the uneven subfloor. It all looked beautiful until I did a deep cleaning of the tiles and grout. After a dirt spot wouldn't wipe clear, I put a little bit more elbow into it and just like that.. the entire row of tiles came up, and another, and still another. In just a moments time I was looking at a 4' x4' area of all displaced tiles and crumbling grout. What was underneath the tiles wasn't the suspected dirt, but rot, mildew, and black mold. Security Mutual has denied the coverage despite the contractor stating that the damage is directly related to the original leak and that he was not given the permission to do the job correctly.

This is a water damage claim which portions were not covered by the policy and insured was issued a partial denial. We paid for any possible covered damages. Under the insurance contract, it is the insured’s duty to take all reasonable steps to protect covered property at and after an insured loss to avoid further damage. This was brought to insured’s attention back in 2017. Policy excludes any loss caused directly or indirectly by neglect. This means neglect by an insured to use all reasonable means to save covered property at and after the time of a loss. It also means neglect by any insured to use all reasonable means to save and preserve covered property when endangered by a perils insured against. Security Mutual makes no restrictions regarding what repairs insured completes to their home. It is unfortunate that insured is now suffering due to any lack of repairs being completed whether covered or not covered by the insurance contract. Payment was made in accordance with the terms and conditions of the policy.
