Alert

(July 9, 2019) – New York, NY – BBB Serving Metropolitan New York is issuing a consumer alert about companies calling themselves Notion Cash and Kids Earn Money, which have claimed to be social media market research firms.

BBB Metro New York warns consumers that potential scammers can set themselves up publicly as online marketing companies or influencer platforms. They have been known to solicit consumers to sign up for their programs to share links, refer friends, create videos, complete surveys or download apps and games to review, with the promise of being paid for doing so.

“We urge consumers to check out companies online carefully before signing up with sites that claim to conduct market research or surveys,” said Claire Rosenzweig, President & CEO of BBB Serving Metro New York, adding, “Unscrupulous sites will make money off the personal information you provide to them rather than helping you earn money.”

Consumers report to BBB that they sign up for what they think is an online marketing agency, where they will earn money by completing “tasks.” The money appears to tally in the account for each completed task, but when the consumer tries to apply for payment, often when they reach a $250 threshold or some other set amount, they report that they are unable to retrieve the promised payment or contact the company for assistance.

To make matters worse, they have also provided the outfit running the scheme with sensitive information such as name, telephone number, email, and in some cases, Cash App or PayPal account information. They also may have provided the names and contact information of friends and family members in the referral process.

One possible purpose of this kind of operation may be data harvesting, for the likely intent of selling the consumers’ information to spammers. There is also the possibility of identity theft.

Between January 4 and March 13, 2019, BBB Metro New York received 27 complaints, 35 reviews, and 6 Scam TrackerSM reports about Kids Earn Money LLC, aka Kids Paid Money. The websites reported by consumers, https://kidsearnmoney.co/ and http://kidspaidmoney.com are no longer operational. The company addresses provided by consumers include 420 Lexington Ave New York NY 10170; 445 Park Ave, New York NY 10022; and, P.O. Box 71918 Manhattan Beach, CA 90267. Mail sent by BBB to the Manhattan Beach, CA and Park Avenue addresses was returned by the USPS.
ICANN WHOIS shows a privately registered domain for kidsearnmoney.co out of Panama on January 18, 2019 for one year. Kidspaidmoney.com shows a private domain registration out of Panama on December 25, 2018 for one year. BBB could find no record of either company being incorporated with the New York State Department of State.

BBB Metro New York has issued the company an “F” rating for its failure to answer complaints filed, lack of transparency, and failure to reply to BBB’s inquiry about advertising claims stated on its website.

Since June 11, 2019, BBB has received nine complaints and three Scam TrackerSM reports for Notion Cash. The website for Notion Cash, https://notioncash.com remained active as of July 9, 2019.
