I used better as my mortgage company for a house purchase that just completed, barely...Better was absolutely fantastic up until I locked my rate with them.The second I locked my rate, I could never get anyone on the phone. It went from full availability to work through things to maybe one time slot open a week and a half out Even when booking those times slots I would get the call from better 20 minutes late!Better also could not seem to understand due dates, which for a mortgage company is a massive deal. Any time something was due, whether it be a mortgage commitment or even the closing itself, Better showed no sense of urgency. The only way I got any documents from them was cold calling thier public line over and over until someone would finally look into what was going on.To top it all off, Better almost completely screwed up my closing costing me the house.Less than 24 hours before hitting the closing table, I called better to make sure everything was still set. Of course, when I get them, my cash to close had gone up 20% from the night before. Less than 24 hours before closing...I spent the better part of that day on the phone and on hold with Better trying to get an answer on why the cash to close went up so steeply, and also why it happened less than 24 hours before closing....After hours, literally hours, of pain staking calls, being passed from person to person, they finally had their mistake pointed out by my title company.Had someone from my title company not taken the time to go through line by line with better, this would never have been caught.Review from Eileen G

Delayed closing by allowing 14 days to pass with no intervention or urgency on getting a simple insurance doc. Continued to text my 'coordinator' with NO response - screen shots of numerous unanswered texts. Finally reached out to Better management only to have them respond that the coordinator had it handled. I hope someone is actually listening to those recorded lines because the coordinator finally reached out to me to tell me she stopped responding to me because she didn't want to upset me?! My **** Estate agent finally was able to assist in getting the docs that Better was unable to acquire. I log on to portal to see that closing date pushed out...with no communication from Better. The loan estimates through out AND the initial closing document was missing $13K of prepaid HOA fees...thank goodness for my TITLE company balancing and explanation!! Only to be told the *** before closing that because closing date was pushed out, I was now responsible for the extra days of interest and that if I question that, it would delay closing even more and that my Better rep would work with management to see that I would be compensated with a gift card 'or such'. Guess what??? Moved forward with close and when I questioned Better about compensation, because they never followed up with me...NO COMPENSATION was approved by the 'team' SKETCHY...0 score for 0 integrityReview from Ankush M

Highly unprofessional processors. They delayed resolving issues on their end, and then in the end told me to use my credits to buy down interest rates and add more funds, otherwise closing will be delayed. Processors were highly impatient and unprofessional. Zero customer centricity.Review from kirsty L

Absolutely awful for HELOC loan. Stay away!!! They require a mandatory large initial withdrawal that they assure you that you can pay back immediately if desired, and then they take up to several weeks or more to set up your repayment account, resulting in your having to pay interest on that large advance that you didn't want immediately anyway (which was my case). I consider this a material misrepresentation if not an outright fraudulent practice. Unwilling to assist once it is passed off to loan servicing center, and next to impossible to reach anyone by phone; slow to call back and slow to resolve. Do not use them for HELOCs.Review from John L

this place is catfishing people to sign applications that make it seem like its "easy" but in reality its quite difficult and only for you to be denied. I am very upset on the lack of transparency of this business.Review from Mathew S

********************* and *********************** almost ruined the ability for me to close on my house. Every time I tried to reach out to them it would take days for them to respond. 3 days before I was supposed to close I look on the portal and the expected closing date had been pushed back by 2 weeks. The appraisal was a nightmare. It was finished on February 1st and I didnt receive it till February 13th. The day they changed my close date I decided to switch lenders and the new lender has just closed me in an astonishing 8 days. I hope ***** and ***** get fired. They dont care what schedule their customers are on and are willing to procrastinate till the very end. Terrible customer service worthy of 0 stars.Review from Gabby H

We used Better in 2021 for a refinance and everything went very smooth. We wanted to use them again on November 30, 2023 to buy a house, they gave us a pre-qual and spoke personally with the loan officer *************************** and her assistant ***************************, we explained that we needed to verify that this pre-qual was accurate since we knew of a problem that reflects in the credit report with a timeshare and that we are fighting with them, the timeshare and credit agencies because everything was a bad business practice and we told Better we have documents to prove it. They said "it probably wouldn't be a problem and as long as we had more evidence", it would be better. Finally in January **** we found a house that was accepted for contract. On January 25th Better pulled our credit report and we asked them if this time we were fully approved since we were under contract and already scheduled an inspection. ******* said she will get back to me that same say 1-25-24. The only thing she told me was that she was checking with underwriting and that she would let me know by the end of the day. On Friday 1-26-24 I sent her an email her auto reply message said that she was out of the office and would return in 2 weeks! I called *************************** and when he didn't answer either I sent him an email and his also came back saying that he was out on vacation! We called the main number and the first time they told us that another loan specialist will be calling us back in 20 mins. That call never came. Our realtor needed to know the definitive answer on the loan to continue with the inspection and order the appraisal. We called again and asked about the loan and they told us they would return the call and that has not happened so far. Better was good but not anymore. Their practices are poor and customer service is terrible. If they are not going to be able to give a loan, why say yes.Review from Gretta L

Horrible experience as first time home buyer. Was buying a house received conditional approval which was a joke! So many requirements them denied randomly without any explanation. This seemed to be a fraud company to me so I reported and had the inquiry removed but they kept my $550 and never spoke to me again. Very dishearteningReview from Tracy J

This company continued to charge my account even after I canceled my service. First they couldn't somehow find my account even though they were emailing me, then I finally figured out another way to cancel and received an email cancelation and 4 months later they still charged my account by using a different name. Please do not sign up with this company what they offer is not worth the money scam!Review from Mauricio F

Please do yourself a favor and avoid Better.com. You are lucky you came here to read all of the reviews. I have a 820+ FICO score where they did a hard hit just to tell me my income was too low. I was "pre-approved" when I initially entered my information so be aware that you will be thinking you are in fact "pre-approved" when you are not. In addition, they collected $550 deposit fee which after a month and a half they haven't returned or even returned my calls or emails. I am not sure if I was discriminated or what their underwriting department does but they do not communicate clearly and in writing. I got the ***** loan with better rates at a local CU so my advise is don't waste your time with better.com.
