I went to Dr. ******************** on 10/7/22 to evaluate a previous root canal tooth that was originally done in 2015, (I have been told), My former Endodontist, I used for *************************** retired, his office is defunct, I have no access to my records of what was done or what codes they used to bill at that time. It was determined that the tooth needed to be retreated. I waited 3 weeks and 1 day to have the procedure to retreat the tooth, which was on 10/29/202, the services were as follows:"Services D3347 Retreat RCT Tooth 4". I went to Dr. ******************** as a provider in my insurance plan, and in good faith, that this service was going to be covered by my insurance company. I heard the doctor ask his staff to call my insurance provider to confirm that the service was covered, staff told me that the services were "completely covered, you don't have to pay anything". Staff called me on Monday 11/21/22 to tell me that the service was not covered. Staff had over 3 weeks to do the work to get preauthorization/determination of benefits for this procedure. If staff could not get the pre authorization/determination in that time I should have been told. I never would have agreed to the procedure if I had known it was not covered. After speaking with staff on 11/21/22 I have come to find that staff never did the work to get a pre authorization/determination of benefits, and now staff is telling me that the information she received on the phone from the insurance company "was not guaranteed," she never once told me that, she is now telling me that the services are not covered and I owe $868.00. It is the job of Dr, ********************'s billing staff to ensure that services are covered and provide patients with informed consent for services before having them move forward with any procedure. I would not have moved forward with a retreatment if I had known I was not covered, I would have gone directly to an oral surgeon for an evaluation for an *********** or to have the tooth pulled.Customer response
