We hired Lisa as a home healthcare aid to assist with care 2-3x/week for our elderly father with dementia. Over time as our father’s condition declined, and 24/7 care was needed, Lisa assured our family that she had a team of people who could provide round the clock home health care. Unfortunately, this is when the quality and consistency of service started to become problematic. While some members of Lisa’s team were competent and committed to our parents’ care (Kim stands out in this regard), others appeared to have little training or experience caring for patients with dementia. Over time we discovered that Lisa’s method for recruiting home health care aids was to hire from her circle of family and friends, which at times led to misunderstandings and problems with quality of care. Though she was receptive to conducting background checks at our request, she was comfortable assigning aids to overnight shifts while awaiting the results . When we attempted to provide feedback expressing our concerns, she responded by abruptly quitting and leaving our parents with no help at all. While not required under New York State law, as Lisa claimed when asked, it is professional and customary to give two weeks’ notice, and to not do so is a violation of all health care industry ethics and places vulnerable elderly patients at risk. Our parents were fond of Lisa and her regular aids and thought of them as family. It is disturbing that Lisa advertises herself as a professional home health care provider for seniors; yet provides an elderly couple that she professed to love with less than 8 hour’s notice ….delivered in the most unprofessional and impersonal way —via text. Fortunately, we were able to step in and respond; otherwise, my parents would have been left with no choice but to call 911.
