Coughlin Concrete poured my Concrete driveway in early July 2021. I reached out to them in early February 2022 to report severe pitting and flacking that was occurring . They evaluated and agreed to replace the drive based on the severity and wanted to replace it on March 1st. I wasn’t comfortable with the date based on freezing temps and they also wanted me to sign a waiver saying the repair would be “as is”. I wanted to wait for warmer temps. They then said to let them know when i wanted them to replace. I have not heard from them since and made multiple attempts to contact over the past 6 months. Winter is coming and I fear it’s only going to get worse. My driveway looks absolutely awful after only 1 year.

***** emailed me February 9th, with concerns of pitting issues in his driveway. I stopped at his residence on February 13th and examined the driveway. The concrete has pitting and scaling due to salt damage from the customer vehicles. The attached pictures show the damage outlining the rear end of the parked vehicles as well as the two tire drive lanes on each side of the concrete driveway. The sidewalk portion of the driveway shows no signs of pitting or scaling as it was not introduced to salt. I connected with ***** and, as an act of good will, informed him that although the damage to his concrete had nothing to do with Coughlin Concrete, we would remove the section of drive and replace it. He was scheduled for the beginning of March and decided that timeline was not safe for an installation based off of a "simple google search". I agreed, via text communication March 3rd, to wait until he was comfortable installing the drive. ***** text on May 10 stating he was ready for "whenever you want to squeeze in" the driveway. As of May 10th, we were carrying a lead time of 16-20 weeks putting *****'s driveway installation at the middle / end of September. He is currently scheduled for September 15/16.  (Weather depending)

This driveway would have been installed and finished in early spring, with no issues concerning weather. When ***** decided to push the project, which is no problem, it was treated as any other installation and put on the schedule in the order it was approved.

The damage on this driveway has noting to do with Coughlin Concrete. The original installation was done in good weather conditions. The new concrete was cured correctly and poured with a high spec. (4,500 PSI concrete, wire mesh reinforcing and proper subgrade installation) It was sealed twice - once after it's original installation and again in the fall before winter. We have done everything within our ability to install a product that is quality. The damage to the driveway was a result of salt and the customers choice to park vehicles in the same location over the winter. We have no control over what happens post installation and even with a new driveway, if the customer chooses to park his vehicles the same way, there will always be the opportunity for salt and freeze/thaw damage. We are replacing this driveway as an act of good faith - covering the full amount of materials and labor, for something that we had absolutely nothing to do with.  I believe this is more than a fair solution to the customer's driveway issues, far exceeding the industry standard for similar issues.

I have not heard back from coughlin after they reached out initially following my complaint.  I suspect it was due to my questioning/objection to signing a re-install disclaimer (states that I will accept the replacement driveway as is).  From Coughlin’s reply, it sounds like I should not have considered a concert driveway if I was planing to park on it during the winter months.  I of course disagree with this.  I understand that some pitting/spalling is normal over time, but would not expect the amount seen after 6 months to be at all normal.  The foot of my drive to the street has been there for 16 years and has no where near this much damage.  Had Coughlin disclosed to me the damage possible parking on it (again I disagree) I might have decided not to install, or gone with another company.  Do you have any recommendations on how to proceed? At this point it seems like perhaps a better route is to pursue getting my money back and taking my business elsewhere.  I don’t see how we can come to an agreement given their response.  Yes they will replace the drive, but I should expect the same result as they admit no wrong doing and plan to wipe their hands of any future problems with me signing.

      Thanks,

      *****

      Good morning,

I was not able to update the online complaint for this project. This
driveway, and the issues mentioned in the complaint, have been replaced as
of the week of 10/10. We removed and replaced the existing driveway
      completely.

      Thank you,

      Michael C*******
