Alert

Thrive LGBT first came to BBB's attention on November 19, 2022, when a complaint was filed. The complaint alleges that Thrive LGBT represents itself as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to help the LGBT homeless population with housing and food vouchers. The complainant alleges that they were hired to work for LGBT as a remote worker. The complainant was promised a large salary and was told that the $400 laptop fee would be refunded when the position was terminated. The complainant further alleges that they have not been paid. BBB has also received several Scam Tracker posts regarding Thrive LGBT also alleging concerns with the business practices of Thrive LGBT. BBB has reached out to Thrive LGBT for information on the business but as of August 7, 2023, has not received a response. BBB was unable to confirm if Thrive LGBT is registered as a charity with the Ohio Attorney General's Office as required.

In August of 2023, BBB again started receiving word that Thrive LGBT was soliciting consumers for remote work for its charity. At that time, BBB received a Scam Tracker report from a consumer who was hired to work as the company's Chief Operations Officer only to be fired shortly after providing her personal banking info to the company. The consumer indicated Thrive LGBT resumed operations as "Thrive LGBT Reunited" and was reportedly based in Columbus, Ohio. Based on this information above, BBB cannot verify where Thrive LGBT is physically located and advises consumers to use caution when dealing with a company whose address cannot be determined

Important Information

Advertising Review

In January 2023, BBB contacted Thrive LGBT regarding claims in its advertising.

Its website includes the logos for numerous private and government insurers including, but not limited to, Medicare, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, United Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente, Humana, CareSource, Aetna, and Anthem.  Its website also includes a "Guidestar Platinum Transparency 2021" button and an "Officially 501(c)(3) Approved" badge.

The BBB Code of Advertising states that the primary responsibility for truthful and non-deceptive advertising rests with the advertiser. Advertisers should be prepared to substantiate any claims or offers made before publication or broadcast and, upon request, present such substantiation promptly to the advertising medium or the Better Business Bureau.

In addition, Ohio law states that it shall be a deceptive act or practice to make any representations, claims or assertions of fact, whether orally or in writing, which would cause a reasonable consumer to believe such statements are true, unless the advertiser possesses or relies upon a reasonable basis in fact such as factual, objective, quantifiable, clinical or scientific data or other competent and reliable evidence which substantiates such representations.

BBB requested that Thrive LGBT provide written proof that the organization is currently an in-network provider for these insurers; that the organization was permitted to use the Guidestar Platinum Transparency button in 2021; and has been approved as a 501(c)(3) non-profit.  The organization did not respond or make changes to its advertising.
